General Info

The Suzuki Alto can be considered as a great car yet at the same time it is absolutely terrible. For starters, we'll look at the price. I purchased mine a few years ago from the Norfolk Motor Group at a very reasonable price of £4999 brand new. This is probably one of the cheapest cars available and if you've recently got your license and are just looking for a brand new car to get you from A to B, then this is certainly one for consideration.

Due to its low value and low engine size, it also means that insuring yourself on the car is pretty cheap. Especially for a new driver as you're less likely to crash in a slow moving car thats brand new with no faults in it.
Fuel & Economy

According to the driver's manual, the Suzuki Alto supposedly holds 35 litres of fuel. However, I've never had to fill up more than 30 litres and thats after driving in the red for a while. As for fuel economy, this alto will easily be able to achieve 64 MPG. Meaning you can go over 300 milies between filling stations and is cheap to run. I often find myself short on cash and just £5 in the tank will keep me going long enough.

The car has a C02 emission of 103g/km which puts this into the £20 tax band. This is fairly cheap if you arn't looking to run an expensive motor. In particular, if you are looking for your first car, this is a bonus as you don't really want to be spending loads after you've forked out hundreds on passing your driving test!
Maintainence

In terms of maintaining the Alto, the cost is relatively low. Since it is a very basic car, there are not many parts that need servicing and rarely anything will have a fault in it. I've had mine for 5 years now and it has passed every MOT with flying colours. However, the only issue it does have is that the cam belt needs to be changed next year which will cost roughly £500. However, this is not due to a fault in it, but due to government car safety issues that every car must have a new cam belt every 6 years due to wear and tear.

Spare parts are also relatively cheap for the alto. I have previously damaged mine by hitting a post which knocked off my right mirror and damaged the front wing. However, since the front wing is separated into its left, right and center parts, I only needed to replace the damaged section. The total cost of repair was roughly £300 including labour charge.
Driving Experience

So what do you actually get for your £4999? Suprisingly, you actually get quite a lot. Mine came with powered steering, ABS braking, driver side airbag, central locking and front electric windows. The clutch on the car is fairly high and can take some time to adjust to if you're not used to something like that and I initially had problems with stalling it when I first started driving but after a while you get used to it.

Due to its small 1.0 litre engine, the Alto does have some serious accelaration issues. 0-30 is all good and fine but if you're on a dual carriageway and are trying to get to 60 or 70, its best to stay in the left hand lane as this will take you quite a long time to get there.

If you live in an urban area where parking is often a problem, then the Alto is a very good little car that'll nip into the smallest of spaces. The Alto is very small in terms of length and width meaning that you can squeeze you way between two cars with ease. In addition to this, it doesn't stick out much into the road so theres less chance of someone hitting it aswell.

Passengers & Spacing

Here is where the Alto pays the price for being such a small car. The Alto only has a carrying capcity of 4 people (including the driver). I often find this to be an issue as I like to drive friends and family around but usually there is one person left behind. Similarly luggage is also an issue as the boot has limited space. However, one feature of the Alto is that is has fold down back seats which means you can extend the boot space giving you more than double the space to transport all your belongings.
Is the Alto worth it?

Personally, I would say yes. If you have a low budget to work with and are looking for a car which has basic functionality of a modern car such as electric windows and powered steering then this is definitely one worth considering. You may not look very cool in it, but your wallet will be very grateful.

Have you actually checked the fuel economy claims?

This sounds like a great little car for the price.

A friend at work had one of these until it got written off after an accident. She used it frequently for long motorway journeys and it seemed to do the job fine. Rachael.
