This little beauty was the first 4 stoke ive owned. I had a break of a few years after riding rev happy tuned 2 strokes, so I decided to go for a light weight 600…. the best on the market was the Gixxer 6.
Speed is fantastic, if your not used to speed beware this little baby WILL catch you out.
Riding around town for the first week of ownership hurt, I got incredible pain in my wrists and the base of my back felt as if it had fused every time I got off. The pain does go away you have to give the radical riding position a chance you will get used to it.
Riding long distance can be as painful, because the bike is “revvy” you will find that the Gixxer can be quite hard work to ride on both long and short distances but this doesn’t matter because when you use the bike for the purpose it was designed (Scratching and going fast) it comes into its own.
Out and out speed is unreal, my top indicated speed so far has been 170mph (on a track officer. honest!)This was with a slight head wind with my head on the tank. You will find it incredibly hard to stay within any speed limit…SO BEWARE YOUR LICENCE MAY BE IN JEOPARDY.
So its quick, it looks good and the engine’s a good ‘un … is it the perfect bike? … NO!
Don’t get me wrong I love my gixxer and im not looking to get rid just yet but it does have its problems.
My gixxer has had 2 cam chain adjusters fitted under warranty (the Hyabusa 1300 had the same problem)
The headlight was so badly fitted that it cracked when I hit a pothole.
The decals started pealing off after about 5000 miles.
The front forks have started to pit quite badly (although it has done 17000 miles in 2 years)
The bike has just started to have power problems which has been a nightmare to solve, my dealer had no clue what was causing it and charged me a pretty penny to tell me so!(I seem to have solved this over the last few days by using super unleaded fuel instead of premium)
Other than that it eats tyres and chains but that’s down to the sheer power the bike has and you will have that problem with any supersport on the market.
In summary, I use my gixxer for nearly 80 miles a day and apart from the power problem that ive had recently I cant fault the engine ive done 17000 miles and its started every day. Its comfortable enough to go 2up for about 100miles in the summer (if the pillion passenger is small)
NUFF SAID, it’s a hard one to beat. Its got the power of a 1000cc bike but the insurance is a lot lower (£400 @ age 29 holding a licence for 13 yrs) and its as nimble as a double jointed ferret.
You pay you money you take your chance...but if you wanna go fast and have fun,YOU CANT GO WRONG
ADIE ;)
