The fact that this little car has only a 1.3litre engine means it is surprisingly economical given its ability and performance.

I bought a new Jimny 'Special' in October 2002, having owned a Vitara a few years ago. My daughter is a 'horsey' person so I needed a vehicle that can cope with off-road as easily as on-road driving. This little champ is first rate at off-road driving. The switchable four-wheel drive is powerful, responsive and effective even in poor conditions. Many of the events we attend require driving/parking in a field. The weather, as many of you will know, has not been particularly favourable or conducive to off-road motoring!
Once back onto a hard surface switch back to two wheel drive for an economical trip. The fact that this little car has only a 1.3litre engine means it is surprisingly economical given its ability and performance. I have been pleasantly surprised by its acceleration too. This is a vehicle that is built for power not speed, yet it takes off from traffic lights and junctions with remarkable alacrity.
The handling is positive and light with effortless steering that is very responsive.
Outside its rugged good looks give it an attractive appearance. Colours are limited, I plumped for the Silky Silver - hmmm very nice. The wheel cover on the spare leaves a bit to be desired in my opinion. I bought the hard case for this as I considered the factory fitted 'plate' didn't offer much protection for the tyre.
On enquiring about a tow-bar I was quoted £300 by the dealership. I had one supplied and fitted for £120 by a specialist garage!!
Inside the front seats are generously proportioned and leg room is deep and wide enough for a good stretch. The driving position is comfortable with instrumentation clearly displayed. Being higher than many other vehicles visability is very good. Large door mirrors make for excellent rear-view vision and these fold in when parked to avoid having them clipped.
In the back leg room is very limited, particularly if the driver and/or passenger have long legs and their seat is pushed back. The individually folding rear seats (of which there are two) provide space for a surprising amount of luggage. I have been able to convey my wife, daughter and self along with two large suitcases and various other 'odds and ends' in reasonable comfort with just one of the rear seats folded down.
I am disabled and require easy access to and from a car. The Jimny has wide opening doors that facilitate the ease of entry and exit I require as well as being the optimum height.
Not the most luxurious car I have ever driven but certainly a most enjoyable drive and a worthy workhorse!
Advantages: Easy to manoeuvre, fashionable, very economical and cheap. Disadvantages: Lack of room in boot and not a great grip on wet tarmac.
...mind until………. I saw a Suzuki Jimny zoom past me.
I immediately wanted one but thought it was bound to be expensive.
The next day I looked on the Suzuki website which directed me to the nearest Suzuki dealership.
To my amazement a brand new Jimny would cost £8,999.
This price was originally £9,999 but the dealership has a permanent special offer of £8,999 for all new Jimny's.
I headed straight for the Suzuki dealership to have a look as I had ... ...had recently taken over the Suzuki Vitara. The Jimny is a city 4x4, which means that it does not drink Petrol like there is no tomorrow.
It runs like a car on tarmac surfaces but can be used for 4x4 driving when needed.
The Jimny has an extra gear stick for 4x4 driving so you can use it for two different types of driving.
I personally know people who drive their Vitara's and Jimny's on very tough 4x4 courses and they cope very well.
However, ...

Advantages: Excellent value for money, and one of the cutest 4x4's by far Disadvantages: Storage space is at a premium - (translated there isn't any)
A true off road vehicle that is stylish on the road too. The Jimny has an aggressive look when viewed from the front, that is offset by its' cuteness.
Compared to some of the other 4x4's I have had/tried it has a far greater degree of comfort. The front seats are generous and fairly comfortable for an economy vehicle. The headroom is unbelievable, certainly an advantage to those of you well over 6 feet tall. There is plenty of leg space in the front, ... ...front seats are back! The only storage space when all the seats are engaged is behind the rear seat, and if you have more than a couple of CD's, a coat and a carrier bag then good luck. However the rear seats split 50/50 (by the way there are only 2 rear seats), and they fold flat for adequate luggage or indeed DIY materials.
There are cupholders provided for each passenger, although the ones for the front passengers are a little awkwardly located ...

The Suzuki Jimny I'm going to review is the 1.3 JLX
What a fantastic little vehicle the suzuki jimni is.
My family have had a few 4x4s all of different makes but there isn't one that compares to this little wonder on wheels.
As we live in a remote area with a steep hill to climb in winter this is the only vehicle to get us home and dry.Others we have had to abandon and walk home on more than one ocasion.

...own a fully loaded 2000 Suzuki Jimny JLX Hardtop. I think that these cars are really underated and you should not make assumptions until you have driven one. I own the 5 speed manual which is great - I would not reccomend the 4 Speed Auto as it would suck up too much power on a 1.3, but if you only have an auto licence or want to run around in town, you're ok. One disadvantage I found is travelling at 70MPH in 5th gear, you are revving at 4000rpm ... ...this by fitting an aftermarket cone air intake which has reduced it to just over 3000rpm and this really does make a difference.
Alot of small Japanese 4x4's lack a proper transfer box, but not the Jimny! , with a Rear wheel drive option and 4HI and LO, off roading is a breeze. You can pick up second hand Jimny's at a reasonable price - I would not buy a new one because in my opinion they have ruined the interior. I picked up my JLX for £2495, T ...

Advantages: Excellent value for money, well equipped. Cute Looks!! Disadvantages: Extremely high depreciation, no boot, pathetic rear door opening design. Cute looks??
an excellent part exchange price for my old car and the Jimny was only less than one year old with 1 private lady owner and only 9,ooo miles with a full main dealer service history to prove.
SuzukiJimny's have a 3 year Suzuki warranty from new which means mine had over 2 years of this remaining. You have to have your vehicle repaired at Suzuki dealerships every 9,ooo miles (if I remember correctly) to keep the warranty valid.
After driving my Jimny a few times, I discovered how totally impractical the rear window and door design was. You had to completely unfasten the rear window zip to open the lower rear door and access the 'boot' which could accomodate about 2 carrier bags of the weekly shop!! Do this in the rain in a supermarket carpark a few times before you purchase a soft top Jimny! The clips which hold the rear plastic door window in ...
Advantages: Great little all rounder! Disadvantages: None!
The people who wrote these must have NO SENSE OF FUN!
I have owned my Jimny since October 2003 and I LOVER HER TO BITS!
I have a v reg all black SuzukiJimny soft top 1.3 JLX with oz racing alloys.
Whatever the weather she is perfect. She ploughed through the snow over the winter, she deals with the muddiest conditions around the farm, is perfect for grocery shopping and running around town and to top it all you can take the top off!!
Ok so the soft top is a bit fiddly, and the clips do pop off every now and again, but you get what you pay for!!!
I have to say the Suzuki dealership I purchased her from were rubbish but the car itself is smashing and she makes me smile every time I see her! ...
Advantages: Easy to park , fun to drive, cheap Disadvantages: lack of comfort , poor dealers, bad roof system in early versions
.
Orignially my car had the cliping rough system mentioned in the other reviews and this was crap as mentioned the clips broke and were difficult to lock into place. Following an accident the repair centre replaced the roof with the system now used on new jimnys (my dealer was useless and claimed this couldnt be done) the new roof system is great with the rear rooff all in one piece and attached with easy to use press studs!
it looks great with the top down just make sure you dont have any loose papers in the car or boot!
finally I can only drive automatics due to disablity so getting a cheap 4 wheel drive I could actually drive was great
insurence isnt too bad and no more for the soft top than the normal version
It has lost its value after early 6 years on the road but is now worth about £3k that said other suzukis such as the laina ...
