Here's to the day they eventually sell it in 2 litre tubs. Plus. 3 cheers for 'Farmfoods'!!! ... more
In these days as never before, health and environmental issues are high on many people's lists. Sacrifices of everyday treats that many take for granted, is virtually always the case. Whether for medical or moral reasons, the curtailment of one's favourite foods is very often the price to be paid.
As a 'lactose-intollerant', it was a 'fast track' into the world of many food restrictions. Suddenly every can, box, tube or sachet was subject to rigorous inspection, just in case the dreaded lactose was lurking within. So many different ways it's used, not just in foods, but medications too.
Initially my diet only consisted of 2-3 'safe' items, then slowly, slowly, I'd introduce one new item at a time. Scouring websites for information, ringing supermarket and product helplines. Sainsbury's sent me a large 1/2'' thick A4 catalogue of their own 'milk-free' products. 9 months on, I'm still waiting for Tesco's to send me theirs, as promised.
On one particular website, instead of just setting-out what you COULD'NT eat, it actually provided a list of brand-name alternative foods, that you COULD have. Hence my joy when a sweet appeared that went by the name of 'Swedish Glace'.
With this referral, came also the warning that not only would it be difficult to find a supplier, but it was also expensive. Quoted then, it was near £2 per 750ml tub. (the only size its manufactured in). Although the implication was that maybe only 'health food' shops would stock/order it, alot has improved since. Freely available at Sainsbury's and Tesco's now, two out of the FOUR FLAVOURS, vanilla and chocolate are generally stocked, at the price of £1.64.
***VANILLA***
My first tub came from Sainsbury's and was the vanilla flavour. I must admit to being extremely sceptical at first, as well as excited. Based on water extracted from premium, organic soya beans, it did not fill me with optimism. I couldn't palate soya milk, let alone 'ice cream'.? A rather strange looking octagonal, black tub it came in too. The picture on the lid of a few scoops of this dessert looked authentic enough. Pushing down the little latch at the side, I pulled the lid off, which can be a noisy and awkward procedure.
First thing that hit me was the delicate light-cream colour, and the pure, sweet smell. Bowl at the ready, I buried the spoon into the snowy mass. I was aware that the texture was firm but light. The first bite was smooth and delicious. Somehow, something just didn't ring true. This couldn't be a permitted food? It's nice, it's sweet, it's creamy, and it's b----y gorgeous!
I couldn't detect the slightest presence of soya, and it tasted divinely authentic.
Now there's supposed to be 6 servings in each tub, but I would argue that the figure should be nearer 4. It really is so tempting to eat the whole tub. My advice would be, to return it to the freezer as soon as possible! I immediately went out and bought 3 more, and whilst putting them in the freezer, I appreciated the octagonal shape actually aided the simple stacking.
***CHOCOLATE***
I've already mentioned the chocolate flavour, which proved (at the time) to be more elusive. Not until 3 months later did it suddenly appear next to the vanilla in Tesco's.
I find the aroma and flavour of this one lighter on both accounts than 'normal' ice cream', and the texture in general is slightly 'spongier'. On the odd occasion I've found it can freeze 'rock hard'. Making it almost impossible to extract from the tub. A fustration of the biggest magnitude!
None the less to have a choice of flavours is most gratifying.
***STRAWBERRY*** (My favourite)
Now, I wasn't sure whether a 'strawberry' flavour was fact or fiction, myth or legend. Whether I'd dreamt of it's existence? Never having set my eyes on it anywhere, and yet I was sure I'd read about it.
I can only gasp in amazement, at the discovery of it, in abundance. in of all places, 'Farmfoods'! You'll never guess how much it was either? A staggering £1 per tub!! Not being one for public displays of emotion, this instinctively caused me to release abounded shrieks of joy. I clasped my hands together with glee, and then touched the tubs like you would if you feared it to be imaginary. My hubby looked rather bemused, stood next to me, and calmly enquired whether I'd like some? Some! Some! 'Do I want some!' I want the whole lot!
Trying to display some kind of self-respect, I waited 4hrs 15mins and 30 secs, after we arrived home, before finally allowing myself to indulge.
I'd got 5 tubs in all, and it did cross my mind briefly, that I might not like it, but my doubts were totally unfounded. As I released the lid. a feast for the eyes was laid bare. At first glance the colour put me in mind of 'taramasalata', but the overwhelming smell of fresh strawberries soon banished that idea. I got an added surprise when the first scoop revealed that it contained some 'ripples'. Again I was overcome with anticipation.
The ripples are actually a strawberry jam, laced unevenly throughout the tub. Each spoonful is therefore unique in the intensity of it's flavour. The texture was very light, soft, yet firm. Everytime I was putting a scoop into the dish, I was putting a scoop into my mouth. An insatiable urge to eat more and more. I wanted to savour every mouthful, but ended-up doing a bit of a 'fox-trot', slow..slow..quick.quick.slow...It was a very eratic gastronomical feat. All too soon it came to an end.
Funnily enough, since discovering this flavour DOES exist, I've felt incredibly happy. Such a delight to look forward to eating something you like for a change.
***MOCHA***
This coffee and caramel flavour is the latest addition to the collection. Again I found this in 'Farmfoods', and again the discovery was thrilling to say the least. I'm noticing that with all the new tubs, that the lids are different, It is the same product, but it's being distributed by 'Perry Ices' of America now, hence the more prominent display of the Swedish flag (?). Aside of the picture of the ice cream scoops in the middle, the surrounding area is decorated with Swedish colours. So be aware. The tub is still the same shape though.
Getting back to 'Mocha', what a 'shocha' to find a fourth flavour! As it mentioned coffee, I thought I'd be a little less greedy with this one. 2x tubs, tops. Coffee flavour is not a personal favourite of mine. But, it too has 'ripples' , of the caramel kind, and has seductive qualities all of it's own. The texture is looser, a bit like the chocolate. The aroma of coffee is light and sweet. Colourwise it's a pale, cream, brown. Eating this, I feel it would taste even nicer with a few chopped nuts.
I rate this flavour as my 2nd favourite.
***INGREDIENTS***
I list these ingredients purely because the product is primarily marketed for people with restrictions in diets, and consider it vital:
All flavourings are natural. It is made sweet ,using sucrose and glucose. Carob bean gum, guar gum, carageenan, non-hydrogenated emulsifier, veg oils, mono diglycerides, and water extracted from premium organic soya beans, are other ingredients.
Nutritionally it admits to not being a significant source of important vitamins, which kinda adds to it's magnetic naughtiness. Per 100g it works out approx. 34 calories more than an average vanilla soft-scoop, at 200cals.
Being lactose, gluten and cholesterol-free are just a few of it's appealing qualities. It is also vegan and vegetarian friendly, completely dairy-free and kosher. Even the container is reusable and recyclable.
***CONCLUSION***
Even if you do not fall into one of the specified categories above, these Swedish ice creams will impress the most discerning palate. My advice would be, to, get down to 'Farmfoods', buy the tubs at £1 a go, I'd defy you not to like it. I know you'd be back for more.!

...mum used to buy the Swedish Glace ice-cream when I was still living at home, so it has been around a while. Back then it was only available in Vanilla flavour and tended to be quite sickly. It is only recently that I have re-discovered the product in loads of fantastic new flavours.... and, by golly, the taste seems to have improved tremendously. I think I may now have to buy a new freezer to fit in all the flavours. (Not that they last for long ... ...genetically modified ingredients."
The Swedish Glace frozen desserts are easily recognisable in their black, octagonal tubs. I must say, they are sometimes a bit tricky to get open when you are dying for a 'fix'! They are all 'soft-scoop' desserts so are a breeze to get from tub, to dish, to tummy! On the front of the tub of Raspberry that I have here, it states that this is "Lactose, Cholesterol & Gluten Free". It also says "contains no genetically ...

Advantages: Better than ice-cream Disadvantages: Hmmm...let me think now..
Swedish Glace is a fantastic non-dairy dessert that looks like ice-cream, but actually tastes better than the ‘real’ thing. Yes, all you Haagen Dazs people out there, you may snigger at me now, but once you have tasted it yourself, your faces will be buried in shame!

After that, Swedish Glace has always stayed close to my heart (breaks my Finnish heart to know that our good old rival neighbours have come up with such a great product…) and my freezer.
For several years now I have been a lactose intolerant, which means I have basically been avoiding all kinds of dairy products, or, put my partner through hell if I had any… (I don’t have to go into detail of what dairy does to your ...

...intolerant or vegan thanks to Swedish Glace you are no longer deprived delicious tasting ice cream. So far I have only tried the vanilla flavour. I was introduced to it at a childs birthday party where some of the guests were lactose intolerant and to avoid discrimination the host bought a couple of tubs of this ice cream so everyone could have the same. I was merrily eating away and quite shocked at the taste when I overheard someone saying how ... ...does have a creamy taste and only the subtlest of soya flavours. I’m usually quite quick to pick up the soya flavours after spending some years on a dairy free diet because my brother was lactose intolerant for a while.
Usually soya products have an acquired taste that you either hate or have to get used to, but it has to be said in defence of this ice cream you would immediately know it was dairy free or indeed vegan. And if you try it as a vegan ...

Advantages: Taste. Flavours. Vegan. Good availability. Disadvantages: Cost. Only one size of tub.
Swedish Glace. (Please note for purely research purposes I have a 1/4 full 750ml tub to "test" :-)
For a start, this will immediately interest anyone who loves dairy ice cream, but went vegan. Dilemma. You like ice cream but can't have it. Enter Swedish Glace. (And Toffuti, but I sure as hell can't find any Toffuti!) It's also good in that way for anyone with lactose intolerance, or any other animal food intolerance.
First, by trying this out, ... ...bit. Like all niche foods, Swedish Glace reaches us, the UK consumer at a rather high price. Especially in Holland & Barrett (a piece of advice: if you can buy it anywhere else than Holland & Barett, please do, it will be cheaper, like so much else! I have had the strawberry flavour, courtesy of Co-op, and a good supply of vanilla (like ...

Unfortunatedly, like all good things, the calories are high, 378 cals per 100g. It compares quite well to a similar ordinary cake.
I won't list all the ingredients, surfice it to say that Tesco has done all the work on the packaging.
Another special treat, this cake can be frozen, a real bonus if you can snap up some bargain buys, on two for one. etc.
If, like me, you do a bulk shop, you can freeze some for those days when you get the chocolate urge!.

How do you eat yours?
Simply as a slice of cake, or let your imagination run wild.
I like mine with Soya custard or a promavel vanilla dessert. Pop in the microwave for less than a minute- instant hot pudding.
Try it with Swedishglace ice-cream, soya dream (wicked). or decorate with icing sugar ...
Advantages: Delicious and free from cholesterol Disadvantages: The Price Is Expensive.
This weekend has been a real treat for me as my daughter has come home for the weekend from Scotland. As she is a vegan and so is her boyfriend, I always try to search out some goodies for her to try, which she may not have come across before.
A good source for these is from my favourite website at www.goodnessdirect.co.uk. This website allows you to search for vegan foods, and it will list them under categories. As it is summer I was looking for some ice cream alternatives, and I found some SwedishGlace which we buy frequently, though the new blueberry flavour was new to my daughter, and we did sample that. However, what really caught my eye was something called "Booja-Booja Stuff in a Tub Coconut Hullabaloo"
This is a scrumptious ice cream alternative made by the company famous for making vegan high quality chocolate truffles ...
