Sweetly smelling peas.

Advantages: Fragrances the house
Disadvantages: Don't last long as a cut flower

...for me is the very sweet perfume of Sweet Peas, or Lathyrus odoratus, to give them their proper name.

So, what are they?

Little round green things, eaten with a knob of butter and roast lamb on Sundays? No, 'fraid not.

Sweet Peas are flowers.

Lathyrus odoratus is the Latin name they are known by. They are related to the pea that we eat, the plants growing in similar conditions ...
...get a hint of the sweet perfume they have.

Sweet Peas can grow on plants up to 9 foot tall, traditionally they grow up something, clinging on with their little tendrils or trailing over something like a wall. Ten years ago I saw a wall of sweet peas growing in Corfu and the scent as I walked past was wondrous, I looked to see how they were growing and contrary to what I thought, they weren't growing from the base up the wall, clinging ... more

...pounds I bought some tiny Sweet Pea's. These are a lovely climbing plant which my mother often used to grow and you get loads of blooms which smell great. I thought they would be perfect to grow up the wall where my one flowerbed was. ~~~ Planting ~~~ I took home my little plants and read the tag. Apparently I needed a net or trellis to grow them up. I popped round to B&Q and found they sold "sweet pea" nets. The box was about £4 and came with loads ...
...my mum I'd got some Sweet Peas to plant in my bed. She told me not to expect too much from them as she had experienced limited success. She also said that she had read somewhere that they would only grow as tall as their roots went deep. This made me think they maybe wouldn't do so well as the soil in my garden is solid clay, not easy for the roots to push through. Anyway I'd already bought the plants and attached the net so I figured I might as ...

Sweet Peas

Advantages: Scent, shape coulour and variety
Disadvantages: Need lots of support

Sweet Peas are one of the most easily grown climer and given the right circumstances can produce splendorous results. I have gained the best results from the seeds I have purchased from Wilko's, any thing from 39p per packet up over! My favourite's at the moment are Spencer Wave, produceing large frilly white blooms on a long stem, excellent in cut flower displays. The variety of sweet peas on the market is outstanding, a great selection of scents ...
...becomming more readily available. Sweet peas ned some sort of support to climb up, in either the form of a wig wam or perhaps a trellis of some sort. Don't be afraid to use your imagination when it come to sweet peas. They can provide a beautiful scented screen or back drop in any garden and with them climing, they take up very little space. Sweet peas need an element of shelter as they are tall and gangly, don't place them in the middle of a hurricane ...

Flowers of many colours

Advantages: Cheap and Cheerful
Disadvantages: Occasional problems with Greenfly

...was inspired to write about Sweet Peas after reading a Ciao opinion by KathrynE. Sweet Peas have always been one of my favourite cut flowers and are really easy to grow, however like many popular plants if you buy them as plants from a garden centre you will be charged over the odds and not get the best selection of scent, size and most importantly colour. Sweet peas come in many sizes and shapes, very tall, hanging for baskets(bijous) small flowers, ...
...coloured or even with stripes. The colour range available is quite amazing, last year I grew a variety called Beaujolais, not surprisingly these were the most beautiful Red wine colour, with a fantastic translucence. This year I'm growing several varieties including Appleblossom, a delicate pink with a slightly frilly edge. For scent you can't beat Spencer Mixed, midsized flowers in a riot of colours with a fantastic, somewhat old fashioned smell ...

The Fragrant Sweet Pea

Advantages: A fragrant bloom
Disadvantages: None

A Sweet Pea is a highly scented annual and has to be one my my all time favourite flowers. Although you can buy the seed and raise your own plants in the greenhouse, which I did last year, most of us prefer to buy the plants from our local garden centre. The Sweet pea starts life as a small thin straggly plant, it may look very puny but in reality it is an exceptionally resilient little plant. Sweetpeas love being planted where they will be in the sun and last year during March I planted mine at the bottom of the garden along the bottom of the fence. The results were spectacular, the spindly plants soon gained strength and started to take hold. We made a good framework out of bamboo canes and garden twine for them to climb. As the plants start to grow make sure that you encourage them to twine up along and through the twine and Sweet ...

Perfumed plant for the garden

Advantages: smell sweet look good
Disadvantages: none

Sweet pea Lathyrus odoratus I am thinking of sowing some sweet peas in the garden soon. I can put the seeds in the soil in the end of September early October. I could wait till April to sow but if I sow now they will flower earlier. The plants tend to be stronger too. I will probably start mine off in a pot then I know where the seeds are but you could put them straight into the garden soil. I shall put the pots in a cold frame. They will be easier to protect against the slugs, snails mice and birds who love them to eat I shall plant them in the growing place in March April time. Sweet peas sweet smell pretty, climbing up fences or trellises. The cut flowers look good in flower decorations or in a summer bride's bouquet I might grow some along side some runner beans up a wigwam in the veggie patch. Sweet peas need ...

sweet smell of summer

Advantages: lovely smell
Disadvantages: none

sweet pea is an absolutley georgeous plant for your garden during summer, the name is a bit miss leading as this plant doesnt produce peas at all but does produce the most beautiful smell in your garden. These come in a vast array of colours so look beautiful as there are so many different colours together and this plant can be put absolutley anywhere, it is a climbing plant so you can get it to trail up trellising on your fencing which can get to about 8 foot tall and looks absolutley beautiful or you can use it as a trailing plant to come down from your container tubs or hanging baskets so is suitable for any garden from the very small to the very large. These are available now in dwarf species which only grow to about 8 inches which are also ideal for your hanging baskets or window boxes. This plant enjoys a cool climate ...
