This was not explained in the brochure and when we queried it before arriving - problems with arranging key collection made us suspicious - we were told not to be so silly and of course the owners didn't live at the property.
In addition to this the property was not up to scratch - not clean (the ... ...pet free but the owners used the property during the winter and had a dog!
When all this was put to Sykes cottages they were not very helpful at all - were apparently not aware the owner lived there and the property had been inspected and apparently met standards. ... more

In addition to this the property was not up to scratch - not clean (the worst being blood found under toilet seat), antiquated heating system, inadequate smoke alarms, strange things happening with electrics etc. To top it all we also found fleas throughout the property that left us with numerous bites to our legs - the property was advertised as pet free but the owners used the property during the winter and had a dog! ...the two previous reviews on Sykes Cottages and have to agree with the general view that once they have the booking they are not interested in any complaint and just pass on responsibility to the owner. In our case we booked a week in a cottage in November and have two complaints arising from inadequate description or misleading information. 1 There was a winding, narrow stairway with no handrail, and none of this was stated in the brochure. In our ... ...was seldom within 1 min. Sykes Cottages' response in the case of 1. was that we should have told them beforehand if anyone had a specific difficulty! In the case of 2. they said that it was “down to personal interpretation” and should have been clarified at the time of booking! How much are we expected to ask? I complained to Sykes immediately we returned home but they were not at all helpful and it was our fault because we didn't ask the necessary ...

...I booked a holiday through Sykes holiday cottages to Biffins Berth in Whitby for August 2009. The cottage was shown in the brochure to be one of three and was described as having an enclosed communal garden. When we arrived we found that we were on a holiday site with approx 50 other properties of which there had been no mention and that our enclosed communal garden was actually the site playground complete with bbq. In my opinion this should have ... ...that Sykes do not care once they have your money and will fob you off at every turn, be very aware that they don't mention all the relevant details in their brochure and then blame you for not asking the right questions.
