...I've always considered myself a loyal kinda gal.
I don't cheat on boyfriends, i've supported my football team all my life, and i like to stick to products that work for me.
The perfect example of this is the tale of Me & My Scanner.
In order to email photos, (no digital camera here!), pictures and transfer hard-copy documents onto my computer, i decided to buy a scanner.
This was 2 years ago, soon after the introduction of the new generation of slimline scanners, i would guess.
I perused the aisles of many an electrical/computer store in search of my future friend.
My eyes fell upon the Canon Lide 20 and that's where they remained.
This was my Christmas present to myself, and it's certainly been a present for life.
But enough of the schmaltz! Here's the nitty-gritty:
Price & availability:
At the time my scanner was £59.99, but due...

Advantages: value for money, scan quality Disadvantages: Install can be a pain, poor included software
...to enter a code (which was not in the box) to get my free software working. Updating the driver software made the situation worse, so I uninstalled the lot and started again....and this is what I did to make it all work:
Plug in the USB lead, turn on, then install software (don't upgrade it unless you hit problems), reboot and it will then finish the install - after that put in a negative and test that the Quickscan works. Try SilverFast, and if it works for you then fine - if not uninstall it and google Vuescan. Download the demo of Vuescan and play around with it - it will put "$" symbols over the picture, but for seeing how it works that doesn't cause any problems. If it works fine for you, get the full version (unlimited upgrades) - for £40 it is worth it. Before you buy the scanner though, budget in the possible cost of buying better...

Advantages: Extremely User Friendly Disadvantages: The "BEEP" when you confirm a scan
...This Symbol SPT 1550 is the best scanner around in an area flooded with similar products. This device is extremely lightweight compared to its competitors and ease of use is second to none. The scanner itself allows you to read barcode labels with extreme ease some scanners on the market ensure you have to be right next to the barcode for it to register but with the Symbol SPT 1550 it allows you to scan from a distance and scan hard to reach barcodes. The product also has touch screen GUI making it extremely user friendly the further you venture into the menus and sub menus you can never get lost due to the aptly named home icon.In terms of memory for this device i once scanned 1200 items in an initial audit i was doing and it had no problems in terms of slowing up....

In summary:
* Very unintuitive, convoluted and unpleasant to use (same on Win2K as XP)
- sometimes the SW hangs during scan and needs a reboot
- sometimes the SW crashes with a dialogue "try reinstalling HP software", and needs a reboot
- sometimes... more
