I thought I'd treat myself - why not? Now maybe I'm mad or maybe I just get it wrong and can't read betweeen the lines. But I bought this watch (brand new, quartz and slightly earlier model than the one shown) as a practical everyday wear watch - not as a piece of jewellery. I like practical solid pieces of kit and, after all, this was a diver's watch, it was fully waterproof and even had an adjustable bit to make the strap bigger to get over your wetsuit. What with the robust bezel and it's notches to enable easy turning when wearing diver's gloves and the scratch-proof glass and the dilithium crystal activated, or whatever it was, illuminated markings I felt like I was in good hands. True, I felt a little bit James Bond with it on and got some admiring comments. True I liked to put it on and just look at how well it sat on my wrist - I too can be as superficial and pointless as the next man. And good it was for a while: but the lovely satin machined finish of the watch eventually polished away and got shiney on the high points and general lost its classy lustre. The scratch-proof glass was scratched quite a bit actually, maybe its not gouge proof - I will admit It had to go through some tough times. The divers suit extension bit broke quite a while before the strap itself finally broke. And the bezel loosened a bit and the glowing dial markings lost a bit of vivacity which was never to return. i have a Pulsar military style watch that has stood up manfully to all that is thrown at it, looks as good as new and only cost forty quid. I still like the some of the Heuer range but more for posing, I think, and telling people about its capabilities more than proving them.

Advantages: Quality, reputation, solid, diving potential, the tests they go through. Disadvantages: Automatics are a nightmare, too expensive, can do a lot better, you wonder if yours was ever tested.
