OK, OK, there are faster CD-RW out there and of course there are now DVD-R that give you that extra bit of storage but this little beauty is just what the doctor ordered. TDK have managed to deliver a great package here both with hardware and the software supplied. They have released faster versions which will please all you speed freaks out there, but with a limited budget and not wanting something so flashy it even makes me a cup of tea in the morning, I settled for this model.
Inside the Box... After emptying the contents of the box like a child at Christmas, I was faced with a good looking drive that does look a bit more than the standard cream coloured CD-RW drives out there, with a transparent blue tray popping out with a press of the eject button and the smooth lines of the front panel, this drive just looks great in my machine. Also in the box was the standard CD-R and CD-RW. There was also a copy of NERO 5.5, IDE cable and even a CD pen.
Setting up and Installing… Packaged with the drive is a large handy step-by-step installation guide to help you on putting your new drive into your computer. It gives you multiple ways of installing, depending on what free drives and cables you have free in your computer. After about 10 min, I had the drive installed and was booting up my computer for the drives first burn.
Installing Software… As I mentioned earlier, the drive comes with a copy of Ahead NERO 5.5 which I find to be a pretty good bit of software. It has a very handy wizard function if you don't want to spend time tweaking the settings and want a quick burn, but it also has the advanced features that can enable you to get the best burn possible with the drive. The software supports Burn-Proof technology in addition to software buffering so you always have a perfect copy and no coasters. A copy of InCD is also included which allows you to use a CD-RW like a very large floppy disk. There is also a copy of TDK Digital Mixmaster, which allows you to use your computer like a digital jukebox. This bit of software also allows you to copy your CD's in double quick time which is great and simple to use.
The whole set-up also allows you to multi-task which means the end of having to wait for your CD to burn before starting some work or surfing the web, you can do both at once.
For £50 this little diamond is perfect for anyone out there who wants to burn a CD in under 5 min or music CD in under 4 and not require a top of the range speed machine. With both style and speed TDK have a really great package here. I just hope they keep it up.
