I have to join Tomps eulogising this product... I have very curly hair which needs washing every other day. On day two, it used to go further and further out of style until I looked like a woman being attacked by a brillo pad or a bale of wire wool. That said, while my hair is very very curly it's also very heavy so the layer that lies over the top of everything else is only ever wavy or straight. When I look at myself in the mirror, it's straight either side of my face, but the minute I put it up and bits start falling down at the sides (or if I look at what's happening at the back) I see ringlets. For some people, the Shirley Temple look is natural I assure you.
Five, possibly six years ago, I finally got a reasonably responsible and therefore reasonably well paid job. Immediately I headed off to a really good hairdressers to have my barnet honed into a grown up executive haircut. I went to Toni and Guy in Cambridge and of course after they'd finished I explained about my evil
frizzy curls. They recommended I use Curl Jam. I thought it cost a lot but I was desparate so I decided I'd give it a punt.
THE GOOD NEWS Does it work? In short. Yes.
I didn't really want to exacerbate the curl situation but Curl Jam doesn't. It simply controls all those frizzy bits that used to tie themselves into hairballs at the back of my head and take about twenty minutes to comb out. Now, each time I wash my hair I put a very small amount of curl jam onto my hands, rub them together and rub them through my hair. Then I comb it in. The result... well, the main result is the fact that I can actually comb it in. But that's not all, it continues to be manageable while it's dry. It does smell gorgeous and it still costs £10.00 or thereabouts.... or at least, it does in Cambridgeshire. Is it value for money? Again, I'd say yes.
Setting aside the fact that, for once, here is a hair product to which I am a) not allergic and which b) works, think about how much other gels and styling mousses cost. Most are around..... I dunno £3.50? and in my experience I have to use them in industrial quantities so they'll last a month or two at the outside. I've been using Curl Jam for over six years and I'm just coming to the end of my third 175ml container. How much would I spend on normal styling products over over a two year period... well, probably at least £40.00 maybe more and I've spent £30 for 6 whole years of trouble free hair management (mmmmm!). I think that's excellent value. Availability.
You can get Tigi hair products from any hairdresser which supports them. In my local town there are five salons and Tigi products are only available at one of them. This can be a bit of a pain but, that said, they are usually available at one salon in each town and of course, since Tigi is a Toni and Guy brand, any branch of Toni and Guy will sell it. THE BAD NEWS
Well, there had to be some, didn't there? The bad news is that if it takes you 2 years to finish a bottle of styling.... erm.... stuff, they could stop making it in the interim and you'll never know. Sadly, this is exactly what has happened to me. Had I been clued up, doubtless I'd have realised, I'd have spent £50 on five bottles and I'd have rested easy, safe in the knowledge that my frizz containment regimen was taken care of for the next 10 years.
Never mind. Toni and Guy do make other hair products, which, I suspect could be why they've stopped making a lot of the Tigi range. I suspect Tigi's original packaging was viewed as a bit down beat and well... middle aged. If you go to any branch of Toni and Guy and look at the way their new products are packaged you'll see what I mean. A whole swathe of the Tigi stable has been branded "Bed Head" with new improved packaging which is just a bit whizzier and, er hem, young looking.
THE NOT SO BAD NEWS I asked about Tigi at my local independent salon and the lady told me.
"They've stopped making a lot of Tigi products but many of the new product generation the same thing they just have different names." So it isn't all bad. It's just a question of knowing what your product is now called. Tigi's new Curl Jam is now called "Curls Rock" by the way. "It's the same thing it just doesn't smell quite as nice." My local salon lady told me.
True, it says, in very small print on the back that it's made exclusively under license for Tigi and it's close - it doesn't smell ALL that different to me but she's right, it's not as nice and it's very much stronger. The ingredients listed on the back are also radically different to the original Tigi product and unlike the old one, there's nothing to say it isn't tested on animals, nothing about recycling the container, nothing about it being natural and non-chemical and... well 75ml missing. Because, on the down side, although it's still £10.00 you only get 100ml now as opposed to 175ml. I used it for the first time today and my hair seems to be holding but the smell, though pleasant, is pretty all pervading. In fact, if it doesn't wear off soon it's going to start bugging me.
I belive that T&G, which is Toni and Guy's own brand also make a re-named equivilent of Curl Jam. I think to be 100% certain I'm going to have to try that one too. I'll update this review when I have found out more. In the meantime, if you see one of the last remaining bottles of Curl Jam on sale in a salon somewhere my recommendation is buy it, it's an excellent product, it works and let's face it, you won't have to worry about finding a replacement until 2 year's time.
