Until 5 or 6 years ago (before decent hair straighteners) my hair couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be curly or straight. A threat of cutting it all off seemed to turn my hair curly overnight, but not those glossy tendrils that you see in the magazines, so off I went in search of the perfect curl defining products …
…. much money wasted and, several part used bottles, tins and tubes later I discovered the wonderful world of Tigi.
Commonly found in Toni and Guy salons as well as a number of online sites Tigi products aren’t to be confused with the Toni and Guy range now found in Boots. Tigi are the Clarins of the hair product world. They aren’t cheap but they do exactly as they say they will.
There are to my knowledge three ranges:

Tigi are an environmentally aware company therefore the packaging is made from recyclable material and the product is not tested on animals.

The first product I would like to recommend to encourage those curls is Uptight Curl Maker from the Bed Head Range.
It’s a yellow spray which should be applied prior to blow drying hair as it is heat activated. I find this product really helps on those days when your hair just doesn’t want to do what it’s told. If I just want a bit of added bounce I won’t bother blow drying as I find that natural heat will give some bounce. For a really curly effect blow dry your hair after application using a diffuser.
Uptight has a really pleasant smell which I find lingers in your hair. At approximately £8 for 200ml it is slightly cheaper than some of the other products but due to the fact that it is a spray it doesn’t last as long.
The cheapest place I have found this is on Ebay at approximately £6, but it doesn’t seem to be as available on there as some of the other Tigi products.
************************************************************************ Tigi Hair Care
I understood from the Tigi stand at the Vitality Show this year that this range was being discontinued, but in researching for this review I have found several websites still selling the line. However it is no longer available in my local Toni and Guy salon.
The product I want to recommend is Curl Jam Styling Gel (175ml).
Curl Jam is a natural non-chemical curl intensifier that contains botanicals. It is great for increasing the bounce and definition of natural curls or permed hair.
The product looks strange given that it is light blue in colour and really gunky but this doesn’t show through when it’s applied. The only disadvantage I have found is that it’s difficult to get to the last bit due to the packaging design.
To use all you have to do is towel dry your hair and scrunch the Curl Jam through your hair. I find an amount equivalent to the size of two peas is ample for above shoulder length hair. The aim is to not make your hair too sticky for a natural curly look. Apply more if you want something a bit funkier. Then dry your hair using a diffuser or if you have the patience scrunch it whilst drying. I find on summer days when it’s naturally hot I can get away without drying my hair and still get extra curl definition, but you will have to see if this works for you.
Curl Jam is expensive at between £10 and £12 dependent on where you get it, but it lasts for ages due to the fact that you don’t need much. If your looking for a bargain try Ebay as prices range from £7 to £9.
Tigi want to funk up all of their products so they have introduced Catwalk to replace the Hair Care range.
The equivalent of Curl Jam is Curl Rocks, which certainly is funkier in bright blue packaging in a similar design to that of the dispensary type toothpastes. Unfortunately they have forgotten to put Curl Jam in the packaging.
It costs approximately £10 for 100ml which is almost double the price of Curl Jam considering you get 75ml less. The smell isn’t as pleasant and I find the texture is sticky. Ok, I know you wash your hands after applying products but this has me rushing to the basin the second I’ve applied it.
Having applied it in a similar fashion to Curl Jam I found that it didn’t seem to distribute as well and left my hair feeling anything but natural after blow drying. Admittedly the name Curl Rocks suggests something less than natural, but if this product isn’t supposed to replace Curl Jam then why is it being sold as if it is.
I would like to be able to tell you if it is easy to get the last of the product out of the packaging but I doubt that I will finish it.
So there is my guide to getting the best out of your curls using Tigi. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading it and please let me know what your opinions on the products I've mentioned.

Tigi products come in extremely plain plastic-looking bottles with the brand name in giant black lettering. The shampoo is a bright orange colour, the conditioner is pale peach and the Creative Genius sculpting liquid is bright torquise - I certainly wouldn't leave these bottles lying around my bathroom as I do with some of my more expensive perfumes and bath lotions, as they are not in the least bit appealing. ...

Advantages: Gel works well, good reputation, look good, contains 'Mega' vitamins Disadvantages: Feel awful, doesn't work nearly as well as it should, no better than any supermarket brand, rather frustrating bottles
...won a more extravagent professional TIGI set off Ciao earlier this month. Whereas the shampoo and conditioner that I regularly use give me hold in my hair, and make both me and my hair feel great, I thought that something a bit more up-market hair-wise would give me a greater longer-lasting feel that was better overall. It is, after all, only sold in professional salons and so my expectations were relatively high.
However, I was somewhat disappointed ... ...seems to me as though TIGI are too 'SELF-ABSORBED' to realise that the majority of the public want a brand that optimises the quality and feel of the hair and not the style.
As attractive and alluring as the packaging is, it takes me several washes to get a feel that comes anywhere close to anything I get with other products, and even then the shine and 'strength' disappears within the first few hours out in the open.
Not only this, but the annoying ...

Advantages: I liked the smell of the shampoo Disadvantages: too expensive, no better than supermarket brands
...I did win was a TIGI Bedhead hair care set. The box arrived in the post after a couple of weeks, and although quite battered, nothing was broken. The box contained a bottle of bright orange shampoo, pink conditioner and glittery blue hair gel. Also included was a watch which went straight to my daughter, as if I had a choice!
First let me tell you about the shampoo. Although I was not keen on the colour, I did think it smelt wonderfully fruity. ... ...and it washed out fairly easily. Although my hair felt fresh and clean I did feel the need for the use of a conditioner.
The conditioner smelled of sickly sweet candy. The first time I used it I did not feel any benefit, but I found that by using a very large amount and plastering my hair with it, then leaving it on my head while I took a bath...or at least 10 minutes, it did leave my hair soft and managable. My hair is fine and flyaway, so I do ...

I?m one of those people who are constantly told, ?Oh, I?ve love naturally curly hair like yours? to which I reply, ?I?d rather have straight hair?.
So the plus points about having curly hair is that with the right products you can look half decent without much effort although the following day can be a different story without rewashing & restyling.
I?ve recently rediscovered Pantene, which I haven?t used since my uni days (big indication that it doesn?t cost fortunes). I?ve been using mainly salon products of late, which I feel convinced they should work wonders as they cost so much! I could not believe that Pantene leaves my hair in better condition to others, including Paul Mitchell, Wella, Andrew Collinge and Tigi.
So what type of hair am I working with:
VERY THICK shoulder length layered dark brown hair with red low ...
