TK Maxx (or for our American cousins TJ Maxx)

Have you ever wondered what happens to the clothes/shoes/toys/underwear/objects/books/luggage/gifts/bedding at the end of the sales?
Well TK Maxx is the answer.
You will find the stores at the top of shopping centres or on out of town retail parks (both of which offer large spaces at cheap rents) and once you get inside you will not find a beautifully presented store with everything to hand (No Next experience this!).
You will find the store broken into categories from clothing to kitchen implements and a lot more besides. Each category may be subdivided, especially clothes into sex/type/size (I.E. Men’s T-shirts XL)
Then the real fun starts!
You then have to trawl through your chosen category, which is where the TK Maxx shopping experience becomes something of an art, in spotting the gold, amongst the dogs (apologies for mixed metaphors) alongside a perfection of what my wife calls, the “TK Maxx shuffle” (the basic moves of which are as follows:)
1: Start with your size and category
2: Go to the beginning of the section and gently move along the rail, pulling the next hanger towards you (this will afford you a glimpse of the garment)
3: if you like the garment, pull it out and look at it closely
4: Think to yourself, am I getting suckered into buying this, because it is cheap or will I like it when I get it out of the store
5: Keep it to try on in the changing room or PUT it back

The whole experience can be reminiscent of a Jumble sale (watch out for the Grannies with the sharp elbows) but with a selection of goods that you might want to buy.

The stock in the stores can be genuine designer label with names that you have heard of, to more obscure labels from the continent and America. (About 5 years a go they were selling Tommy Hilfiger before he became recognised over here for instance) and it is a lot cheaper than on the high street, but remember the range is restricted and probably last season. So don’t go in and expect to buy exactly what you want, as they probably won’t have it! But you may find something much more exciting!!
The stock rotation is good with new things arriving every week but I find that a trip once a month freshens the offer and in the intervening period go to another branch (the stock is not the same in each store!)

My favourite part of the store is the further reductions area, signified by a red sign (Stating: Further reductions!) here is where you can spot the real dogs (AVOID THEM they may be cheap but you will regret buying them !!!!) or the things that are too fashionable (The same thing could apply here as well) where the reductions can be spectacular (Recently I bought Calvin Klein Jeans for £12.00)

So Overall I love shopping here but remember the golden rules

1: It may be cheap but do you really like it or need it
2: Perfect the TK Maxx shuffle
3: Avoid Saturdays
4: If you keep going you will find the bargains

I have to say that I never look at the clothes (the clothes in the Sheffield are downstairs and they are never exciting enough to bother going downstairs!!) but the household stuff is pretty good. Thanks for the info! Anna

I find TK Maxx great for houshold stuff too - I recently managed to find a Le Crueset kettle for gas hob at less than half price!
