Now you would think that designer clothes and bargains go together. Well nor did I until I stumbled upon the wonder of tkmaxx.
I always used to avoid my local tkmaxx because I used to think it was one of those cheapo discount shops where the only items for sale seem to be tight nylon t shirts for anorexic 16 year olds.
One day I happened to go in there I think I was looking for summery clothes for my holiday but it happened to be January so I was having a hard time finding anything. It was a bit of a revelation.
When you first enter a tkmaxx it looks a little bit like a jumble sale. It has a general no frills look, there’s no fancy decor. The basic concept of Tkmax is designer name clothes from the previous season are sold at a sometimes quite substantial mark down. They’re all brand new clothes but just from last season, so unless you’re a real fashion victim and just wouldn’t feel right in last seasons clothes you can get good quality bargains.
Tkmaxx is an American company that has been going in America for over 25 years. There are 123 stores in the Uk and Ireland. You can check if there is a store near you by looking at the store locator on their website (www.tkmaxx.co.uk)
I’ve even converted my other half. He used to spend what I thought was a lot on clothes, which probably isn’t a lot because I’m also a big fan of charity shops. So he’s found a bit of a compromise good quality clothes that don’t cost the earth.
Tkmaxx has the following departments
LADIESWEAR This includes t-shirts, skirts, casual and formal trousers, blouses, knitwear, swim wear, sportswear, coasts and in some shops I’ve seen evening dresses
MENSWEAR This includes t-shirts, knitwear, trousers and swim wear
LINGERIE In some of the larger stores they sell lingerie
CHILDRENSWEAR
SHOES
ACCESSORIES
JEWELLERY (In certain stores)
HOMEWEAR (In certain stores)
They have a variety of designer labels: french connection. Ben Sherman, DKNY, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfenger, Dockers, Sonnite, Quicksilver, Catherine Hamlett and Nike and many others.
Generally speaking you won’t et anything for much less thatn £10, but as I’ve said it’s good stuff. Most prices are between £10 and £25, that excluding coats and evening dresses which are a bit more than this. Today I brought a Ben Sherman shirt that was reduced from £30 to £12.99. My other half brought a quicksilvr shirt that was reduced from £43 to £16.99. So that gives you a brief idea of the bargains you can find it’s like looking through a constant sale.
There's a huge amount of choice in TKmaxx and it's a bit overwhelming when you first go in there and see racks and racks of clothes, if I didn't know the joyous bargains to be had I don't think I would bother. Their website estimates that they have roughly 50,000 items in store and a new 10,000 items arriving every week.
It’s the only clothes store I’ve been to where people take shopping trolleys around the aisles and look as if they’re spending their life savings as they load half the shelves into the trolley. So if you like a bargain, but don't like cheap clothes Tkmaxx is a great place to look.
