I work for a company that relies on Courier Services to get packages to site the following day. Over the years we have tried many different Couriers, been let down and moved on to the next one, but we have always kept an account with TNT.
A BITOF BACKGROUND
TNT have their origins in Australia when a man called Ken Thomas set up his own Courier Service with a single Truck just after the Second World War. This one man business grew steadily and today TNT are part of a huge Global Courier Service operated by a Dutch based Parent Company.
Much of the growth came about as a result of takeovers of small local Courier businesses. Today TNT has a network within 63 different Countries and employs 162,000 people but it can actually serve over 200 countries through its connections with local services.
WHAT THEY OFFER
TNT offers a wide range of different services for delivery of Parcels and small Packages across the UK, Europe and Worldwide. Within the UK they offer a standard next day delivery or timed deliveries which are delivery before 9am, before 10.30am or before Midday.
Overseas deliveries fit into two different categories. These are Global Express and Economy Services. The Global Express Service will guarantee delivery of your Package anywhere within Europe by the close of business the next working day, or within 2 days for the rest of the World.
Economy Services generally take 3 days to delivery within Europe and up to a week worldwide.
All Services provide a signature for the person that has signed for the package at the other end as well as the date and time. This is a vital proof of delivery and one which the company that I work for relies on heavily.
MY EXPERIENCE
The majority of the Packages that are sent out by the department that I work for are usually between 1-10 kg in weight and on either a standard next day delivery within the UK or a timed delivery within the UK. There are a few packages that go to Holland and Belgium but these are not daily.
Timed deliveries are obviously the most critical ones and the real test of how a company of this nature performs. We have to send many Packages to our Engineers on site when parts are missing and these are often on a before 9am delivery since missing components on site can often mean that the job on site has stopped.
The vast majority of these Packages do arrive on time but around 5% (one in every twenty) do not.
WHAT ABOUT WHEN THINGS GO WRONG?
All despatches can be tracked Online so when an Engineer rings up to say "Where's my Parcel?" the first course of action is to log on to the TNT Website.
All Businesses are given an account number and password to access their despatch details Online and when Parcels have reached their destination satisfactory this is very detailed and tracks the item through each depot that it has passed ending in a scanned image of the signature of the person that has signed for the Package.
However when an item has failed to arrive on time this is where things go wrong. The details on the Website will generally say "No Information currently available" and therefore a telephone call to your local TNT depot will be necessary.
Actually getting through to a person on the other end of the phone is usually the first hurdle since the lines are constantly busy and being held in a queue for up to 30 minutes is not unusual. This is frustrating to say the least. Once you finally get through to someone they quickly come back to you and inform you that there is "No Information currently available" and take your contact details with a promise to get back to you.
I generally find that we receive a call from site advising that the Package has turned up around half an hour before we get a call from TNT advising of delivery, and during the period where the item is missing we hear absolutely nothing at all.
Late delivered items come with little or no apology and although these are credited from your account (delivered free) there is no offer of compensation available.
CONCLUSION
All moans aside we are committed to using a Courier Service of this kind and having tried many others TNT are actually more reliable than the rest we have tried, but it is their timed deliveries and customer service that let down. On standard next day deliveries their record is actually almost 100%.
They are also more expensive than most of the other Couriers we have tried but since we have a negotiated corporate contract it is not particularly beneficial to list the prices we pay here as these will bear little or no resemblance to the prices paid by others.
On a positive note their service to Northern Ireland is very competitive and reliable but will generally take two working days for your item to get there as a next day delivery to offshore UK locations is not guaranteed.
So to conclude TNT are pretty good but they are far from perfect and there is certainly scope for improvement.
Advantages: generally fast and reliable Disadvantages: some overseas destinations may cause problems

The help line is friendly and seemingly efficient to begin with but after a couple of calls you may find that frustration sets in as your enquiry doesn't seem to be progressing very fast. This is particularly evident when overseas packages are involved. The problem seems to be that TNT rely on local courier services in the countries and areas where they don't have a depot and ...

...say 'goodbye' from the moment TNT pickup your consignment until they drop of the consignment, you are going to get a 100% fantastic service. Not only do TNT offer a next day service, they offer a sameday service, many overnight options and an international service. They might be a little more pricey than your average courier, but TNT are not average. They are fantastic!. One call really does it all. 0800 100 600 and you are through to an operator ... ...This is where companies give TNT their parts, for example, machines. If a customer calls the business up and says ' I need my machine fixing' a local engineer can ring TNT and get the parts delivered to him, from the nearest tnt, using a dedicated veichle!. THis service is fantastic.
TNT have a nationwide network of veichles, going anywhere you want them to go. They employee thousands of people, to ensure the customer gets the best service possible. ...

...had a visit from a TNT rep. After about 30 minutes of listening to the usual sales pitch she handed over TNT's prices. After another 15 minutes or so she left to give me a while to look at the prices and compare them and she'd call me in a few days time. After sitting down with my boss at the time we figured that the rates TNT were pretty competitive with the rates we were paying with our then courier. So, we decided to give them a try out.

...February 2001.
I used TNT to ship my laptop computer to a company in London who were to look at servicing it for me.
When the delivery van came to pick up my package, I had to ask for a receipt as the driver was going to leave without issuing one.
After numerous phonecalls the next day (as the parcel had not arrived at it's destination) TNT informed me that they had no record of my delivery on their computer system. This effectively meant that ...

Advantages: Cheap, reliable next day delivery Disadvantages: Not good with fragile items!
I feel I can speak with some authority about this company as I have experience using this courier with 4 different companies.
For non-fragile items I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them, especially for UK mainland deliveries (though their next day delivery prices have just increased from £10.40 to £11.45 before vat I believe) I think up to 25Kg.
Collection and delivery is reliable, though on rare occasions they haven't turned up or items have become ... ...have made it on time.
BUT...and this is a big but if you are sending fragile items....I have found them to be very poor on handling fragile items and have made several compaints and claims against them for damaged goods. Claiming money back can be difficult as the customer is expected to inspect goods on receipt and check that they're OK, but this rarely happens.
So, my advice would be to definitely give this company a try for next day delivery ...
