Title: Toca World Touring Cars
The Codemasters produced Toca series also made a welcome appearance on the Playstation but the visual differences and updateable vehicles made the PC version the one to have. Toca 2 plays like an absolute dream offering some excellent racing action whilst keeping it playable and challenging. When Codemasters announced that the Playstation was getting a game called Toca World Touring Cars I was literally straight on the phone to them to find out if the PC was going to be getting this title. The response: No. NO?!!!!!!Here it stands today though – Toca WTC on the Playstation and what a truly great title it is. Toca 2 did make it to the Playstation too and what you essentially get with Toca WTC is a global version of Toca 2. T2 concentrated firmly on the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) whilst WTC features cars and tracks from around the world and if you’re thinking that this injects a whole new dimension in to an already respected title you’d be absolutely right.
It’s a Playstation title so let’s face it, the graphics are very average indeed by today’s standards. By Playstation standards, however, this title is actually quite impressive. Cars are quite boxy but overall there is little to complain about in the visual stakes. There is pop up but it’s restricted to scenery (not vehicles a’ la PS2 Crazy Taxi).
One of my favourite visual features in this game is when your vehicle is damaged. Panels are bashed in, glass shatters and your vehicle generally starts looking like a complete mess. On top of this though is wings, bumpers etc actually coming loose. If one side of your bumper is rammed it will partially break and scrape along the floor creating some rather amusing and effective sparks as it’s dragged along. Eventually the panel will fall off for others to hit. Great stuff!
Even the menu is really quite lively and you’ll be put in an upbeat and hyper mood before you’ve even climbed behind the wheel of your glossy new car.
