Universal remote that you need
Advantages: Simple to use, great interface, simple to program Disadvantages: None
...missing somewhere.
We bought Logitech Harmony 525 2 years ago. I knew it would work for me as I am a gadget man. I was slightly apprehensive about my wife and worried about my in-laws (when they come to visit us). I thought it might be too techie thing for them.
It turned out as a very simple to use. I have setup 4 activities - Sat1, Sat2, DVD and CD. You program it on Logitech site using web interface and then sync your remote via USB cable. When ... ...average household with 4-5 boxes under the TV. Logitech database is great and it is more than likely that your devices are already there and universal remote will pick up settings from their web site.
Wholeheartedly recommended product.
The cheapest I have found it (10/10/2008) is £38.5 at

Nice product but there is better
Advantages: Nice looking piece of kit that will control everything Disadvantages: Complicated to set up
First of all I think this device is designed wonderfully. It looks great as a remote and the docking station to charge it is equally as nice. So far I have found that the battery lasts days and days and weeks, so it isn't necessary to charge it whenever its not in use. But I have only had it for a month or so.
To configure the device you install a piece of software on your PC, connect the remote via USB, and log into a website. On this site you ... ...you have, any activities you want to set up and configure options such as delay times, slideshows, delays etc. This site is not the best though. I have had trouble finding where certain things are. Its also very slow to use. You will find yourself doing a lot of clicking, and in between each mouse click you have to wait for the next page to load - change option...wait...'are you sure you want to change this option'...yes...wait...'option changed' ...

The best universal remote control that I've tried
Advantages: Completes complex source switching with a single keystroke Disadvantages: Not much
...last 2 years) and this Logitech Harmony product stands head and shoulders above the rest. The set up requires a PC or MAC. I found the software excellent. Initially the software asks for the make and model numbers of the devices you want to operate. Logitech have a huge library of devices (they claim 175,000+). If your device is not there it has the ability to learn from the original R/C. Then you can set up activities listing the devices involved ... ...DVD may need the TV, DVD and AV amp with the TV source set to scart 2. If you need to you can assign any function to any key in any mode and you can fine tune the operation right down to the time delays between commands on individual devices. I have 9 activities programmed for 8 components but the device can control up to 15 devices. The final operation is sending the settings to the R/C via a USB cable.
All the standard buttons for controlling ...

John Lewis JLPA02 - With any indoor aerial reception is an issue.
Advantages: Small, easy to move around the room. Disadvantages: High price for low build quality.
...trepidation that I went to John Lewis and was once again bombarded with a selection of indoor aerials, all promising to give me the strongest, cleanest digital TV signal I’d ever seen. I made my choice – the JLPA02 - which was about £25 at the time. Taking it home and plugging everything in, the TV went on. A quick scan with the freeview receiver gave me all of the digital channels except those on the BBC 1 & E4 multiplex, a definite improvement. ... ...and changed the position of the aerial to see where I generally received the best signal. Having settled on a position, I rescanned the freeview box and had the missing channels, with signal at around 50%. This, however, was soon to change. When I woke up the following morning, digital reception was nowhere to be seen. Thinking that the aerial must have moved, I repositioned what I had previously considered the pinnacle of all indoor aerials, and ...

I am in complete control
Advantages: Tough, Easy to use, Not overly Priced (if you ever need a new one) Disadvantages: Mine has tooth marks on
As Sky Plus has began to be a key part of my life I'm now starting to adore the control just as much as the overall service. Coming in a primarily gray colour with a black back and trim (including most of the buttons), the device is well laid out and simple to navigate. At the top are the On/Off button, the Sky Button and the TV button (allowing you to control the TV with the remote instead of needing both a TV remote and a Sky remote lying about ... ...it is on the old Sky remotes allowing you to scroll between programs and channels with ease of just using your thumb to see whats on now and whats on next. The simplicity of sticking a reminder on the programs later the same day is done by pressing select as is changing channel via the scroll menu's an incredibly simple way of navigating a vast number of channels swiftly. The volume control is on the left and the channel change (up and down) is on ...
