The first time I remember visiting a TK Maxx store, I was amazed. The store itself – at the Galleria Shopping Complex in Hatfield, just north of London, was BIG and the racks of clothes spread far and wide. But they were a mess.
It was amost like an ‘art’ to actually find something worth buying. True, there were ‘designer’ labels on offer at rock bottom prices, but frankly some of the stuff looked second-hand and at best looked very ‘out of date’. It looked like a dumping ground for all the ‘big name brands’ to offload their past season’s outfits. Not just last year’s but some shirts and jackets looked like it was the previous decade! Right, so fashion changes and I’m hardly anyone to talk about being on the cutting edge of what’s ‘happening’ in the world of young peoples’ clothing. Did I just use the word ‘happening’…well see what I mean?
It was most definitely a time of a fashion revolution where the name on a shirt, pair of jeans or girl’s top was far more important that what it actually looked like. If it had three years ago’s Tommy Hilfiger logo on it – that was fine, despite the fact it looked like something you’d buy down at a Salvation Army jumble sale. If the styles were not exactly ‘up to the minute’ then the clothes themselves looked like someone had picked them up off the floor and then screwed them up and thrown them back on the rack again.
Did I say that I was not impressed?
I honestly did not think that TK Maxx would last. I knew there were a few other branches in the chain – mainly housed in the big retail Shopping centres throughout the country. I expected that the young and trendy would tire of shopping in a haphazard environment, especially as other alternatives – like Tescos beginning to sell small amounts of buying Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren clothing – would want ‘in’ on the act.
But, I was wrong. Now they are springing up in all kinds of places and the smaller towns are even getting their own TK Maxx’s. The stores themselves are large and bright and gone is the “pile em high, sell ‘em cheap” philosophy. They still have good deals on designer wear – albeit not at ‘rock bottom’ prices. They still sell mainly past season goods, but the quality is better and the variety too. I would guess that now they have a number of stores throughout the UK, they can rotate stock amongst them – to ‘freshen’ up each store. I know that near me, in both Bedford and Stevenage, whenever I am in there they seem to be constantly re-stocking. It does not impinge upon you, the customer. And it has the advantage that the onlooker sees that stock is changing daily and thinks, “I’d better buy that dress or sweater today, because it will be gone by the weekend”. Clever eh?
Walk into a TK Maxx and you will see racks of women’s seperates, for both young and old. Some are designer names, but much is not. The names may mean nothing to you, but generally they are US makes (or that’s what you are inclined to think), therefore they must be good!? Most stores will stock toys and games as well as a fairly rudimentary supply of ‘nic-nacs’ (no, not the potato snack!) Things as common or garden as framed pictures, rugs, mirrors will line up alongside handbags, luggage and…undies.
Menswear will have rack upon rack of shirts, t-shirts, polos, trousers and jeans. Makes like Timberland, Calvin Klein, Burberry and French Connection entice the buyer – but beware of the rubbish. Hidden alongside and in between are makes you could buy at any low grade chain too and they don’t seem to be reduced by much. You can buy things like Ben Sherman shirts there for around £25 – but you can find plenty of other outlets that will sell them for less.
Sportswear like Adidas, Reebok and Nike is stocked, but once again, don’t expect the same gear you can see down at JJB Sports. This is ‘past season’ stock, reduced as such too. In effect it’s the gear that the other stores couldn’t sell in their sales, now offered to you as ‘Quality for Less’.
That’s not exactly TK Maxx’s slogan – in fact it’s borrowed from a chain of stores in the US called Ross. Much like TK Maxx – themselves a US Brand – Ross sells ‘names’ to the masses. Their stores are found in low rent areas of Cities and they operate the same retail ethos as TK Maxx. But I’d recommend that any of you travelling to the US this Summer take a look around for a local Ross store. If you’ve tried TK Maxx over here, you’ll know what to expect, but you’ll find better quality and better prices too.
So TK Maxx is here to stay – but it’s a far cry from 5 years ago when they first arrived on these shores. My son and his mates from College would make their monthly foray into the local store and return gleefully, joyously displaying their new found designer bargain – which Mum then has to wash thoroughly and iron carefully!
Advantages: Fantastic range of clothing available Disadvantages: No loyalty card scheme in operation
One of the best things of shopping in places far away from you normally shop is the discovery of new stores. In June 1998 my wife and I took the train to Croydon for a day’s outing. I had been to the Whitgift shopping centre before but this time we came across T K Maxx.
Subsequently we have discovered T K Maxx stores in Ealing, London and in the Princes Quay shopping centre in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire.
The first thing to strike you ... ...area of floor space available. Hand baskets are available but I prefer the mini trolleys, which look quite cute. There are signs, which say that over 10,000 items are brought in every week.
The store in Hull is where I shop the most. Really there is something for everybody in the store. On entering the store the first items to catch your eye are discounted everyday items eg sunglasses, cosmetics, wallets, watches, presents for Easter, perfume etc.

Advantages: Huge choice, cheap Disadvantages: Not many sizes of same garment
One of the great things about shops like TK MAXX who sell past season clothes is the price of the products, kinda like Cheshire Oaks were I can find a pair of Versace jeans for £60! If only TK MAXX would stock the same brands as other retail outlets then it would be the best value shop around.
Generally I would say you would save about 20% on the recommended retail price on most products.
The reason TK can sell their goods for such low prices is ... ...they aquire for a cheap price. Therefore passing the savings onto us! The goods are not faulty factory rejects either which means that they are even better value. Its also good because they stock designers such as DKNY and GUESS, and top sports brands such as NIKE.
Their range of products is quite large, they cater for all age groups, babies, teens, men and women. Providing a large selection for each age group. The kind of garments that are available ...

I am six feet and four inches in height. To the "liseur moderne", that is one metre and ninety three. It is possibly this feature which has led to an aversion to clothes shops, shoe shops and any other bloody shop where size matters. Sigmund Freud would hold that it happened in infancy: maybe my mother took me to Mothercare in a pram, only to be confronted with sharp intakes of breath and shakings of the head when I was measured for a blue romper ... ...shoe shop and remove a suitable left shoe from the rack. It is Saturday and half the population of Southern England shares the floor space with me. Through the maelstrom I push and approach Donna. Donna is new. I know that she is new, because her name tag is written in crayon. I ask for "this in a twelve please". Donna, bless her, looks down and no longer sees a shoe - she sees the hissing remains of an unexploded bomb, or an unexpected body interred ...

Advantages: Affordable brand names, huge selection Disadvantages: Badly laid out
On entering the Cardiff branch of TK Maxx there is a sign which states "Once you've discovered our prices on famous brands, there's no turning back."
Well, this is true to a certain extent, as long as you have the patience to sift through rail upon rail of clothes to find that little gem of a bargain you are hunting for. This is because the layout is by size, not by brand, colour or any other category which might make more sense.
But the bargains ... ...clothes are last season's designs, something which doesn't really bother me, especially when it means that they tend to be about 1/2 the RRP. I bought a pair of Rusty shorts for £12.99 (RRP £35.00). Other brands on offer include Billabong, Quiksilver, Nike, Adidas, DKNY, CK, Kangol, Speedo and Firetrap. The selection is huge. Yes, there is plenty of rubbish, but if you have 1/2 hour to spare you'll almost certainly find something.
TK Maxx's catchphrase ...

Advantages: Cheap, branded clothing Disadvantages: poorly displayed and arrangement of products
...be a TK Maxx shopper? TX MAXX can hold some of the best bargains in designer names for men and women. The prices are low and real bargains can be found. But be warned! Only Men with lots of will power and patience should enter this store, those with a phobia of shopping when with thier girlfriends should stay away. The reason for this is because TK Maxx is set out like a big jumble sale. Clothing is split into types (ie tops, trousers, shoes ect) ... ...long rails all tightly crammed together. Most of the stuff is either in extra large or looks like the back end of a rainbow, however there is good stuff in there if you keep searching. I had to search for a good half an hour untill I found somthing I liked, but it was worth it. I got a funky DNKY top for £16 when the recommended retail price was £30. So as you can see it is possible to find stylish clothes at affordable prices, but you have to be ...

Advantages: super high quality designer and high street clothing at around £20 Disadvantages: a lot of people act like lost idiots when they're in there
I?m a HUGE fan of txmaxx, that is the first thing I?ll say!
BUT I am absolutely amazed by the mentality of people when they?re in this shop, which really baffles me. Reading some of the reviews on here did make their behaviour just slightly more understandable?
Every time I walk into this shop, I go straight to the rails to rummage through. It?s hard to expect what you might see at this particular visit, but then that?s the fun of it. While all the other high street shops sell the same old seasonal stuff at any given time, txmaxx has a very large range of suppliers (some foreign), which is a Godsend if you hate current formulaic high street tat, i.e. smock tops.
I?d say I?m a fussy, stingey shopper and guided by quality, as I don?t have a massive income I can?t cough up constantly for over priced clothing which falls to ...
