Advantages: Everything! Friendly, fun and fascinating Disadvantages: You've nothing to lose! Some prejudice from customers if you're female
...I'll be honest. I love working for Wickes, I've worked there for just over a year since our local Focus store turned into one. The people are all really friendly and we go out together all the time - the company puts money into each store's social fund so the drinks are on them! However much you earn is up to you effectively. There are bronze, silver and gold delivering excellence awards and your pay increases for each one you reach. To reach an award the main thing is to acquire product knowledge. I admit i knew absolutely nothing about DIY when I started but now I know all about decorating, plumbing, electrics, kitchen design etc It may sound boring and believe me I really thought it would be but its not, its quite fun. Plus I love the look on customer's faces when they get a short young girl telling them how to connect...

Advantages: Friendly staff, staff discount Disadvantages: working weekends
...I worked as a sales assistant at the Marlow store for 6 months in 2004.
I found the staff I worked with extremely friendly, and we also went out after work on a few occasions.
I was earning just over £5 per hour.. which wasn't bad. Also you get a 25% staff discount.
Typical Day
During a typical day (9am-5.30/6pm), you had to fill up your card sections, take money to the bank, had about 1 hour 15 min break during day (1hr for lunch), tidy up store.
- Store opened at 9am
- each member of staff then had their own sections to fill and tidy during the day, as well as taking hour turns serving on the till.
- you got an hour lunch break, and a 15 or so min break in the afternoon, where you could sit in the staffroom, and on lunch you could go out the store and into the town.
- after lunch somone would take the money to the bank
- after...

Advantages: Choice, helpfulness of staff, ordering to products Disadvantages: Some items slightly pricey
...I have to say first that I am rating this store as somewhere to shop, not somewhere to work, so the category choices I have made are not accurate.
I went into Clinton's earlier today, which is unusual for me as I make all my own cards. But I was in need of a small gift that was nice for a relative. I was advised Clintons have plenty of nice things to choose from.
When I entered the store it was lovely and clean and everything seemed to be in the correct place (I can only speak for my local Grimsby store). I found everything was laid out well, and there was indeed plenty of choice.
When I couldnt find exactly what I wanted I asked one of the assistants for their opinion, and was pleased at the response. They swiftly collected all the appropriate things from around the store that were suitable for me to look at and compare...

My current USB drive is old & slow and packs a humungous 128Mb so I figured it was time to upgrade. I decided to look at this Verbatim because the price premium was small over a no-name equivalent with the 2Gb version clocking in at just £14.99.
