...while, those things can wait, Tandy clearly needed my services. So there was I fresh faced and naive enough to think that by maintaining a professional attitude towards my work, no matter what it was I would be certain to go far. Going far in Tandy hadn’t really been top of my list but for now it would have to do.

This attitude of professionalism even went as far as purchasing my very own shiny salesman’s suit with which ...
...illustrate is the dedication of Tandy staff over those your likely to meet in other electrical stores, or maybe it’s stupidity. Either way the staff I’ve worked with and met in Tandy stores have generally given more of a toss than other high street stores.

As far as plus points for Tandy you can generally find more specialist items for sale there, such as electronic components, audio separates, speakers and mixers, though ... more

I cant speak for any other shop around the country, But my local shop is a little gem. I brought my PC there after my bad experience with PC WORLD. The staff at the shop were fantastic, they never tried to pressure me once and was really helpful, They seemed to know about the things they were selling which is proberly a first. The lay out of the shop was well designed and every product was easy to get to and very visable with all the infomation ...

The shop has all the top brand makes like JVC, Technics, Panosonic and Sony. Another thing i liked about the shop was that it was not that busy, i know that dont help them, But is always nice to be able to take your time to find what you want. I recommend this shop to anybody who appreciates customer service. ...

Where Have All The Tandys Gone - Feb 2001 Version

Advantages: Handy for obscure bits of hi-fi, and assorted electronics.
Disadvantages: Now very thin on the ground

...tortuous, but here goes. Tandy Shops became a subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse. The latter had a cold hard look at the suitability of many of their sites. Some of those that were considered surplus to requirements, were changed to Tecno Camera shops, another subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse. Soon afterwards, the Tecno shops were sold to Jessops. Voilą - Tandy to Jessops via Tecno. I must admit I mourn the passing of Tandy - I started having to ...
...Still, it's my fault along with thousands of others who liked to know that they were there, but bought b*****-all from them. * UPDATE - Just got back from Kingston, even that's gone, (the store, not Kingston) although there is a Maplin shop there instead, so I suppose you could say that was even more useful. I bought something there and asked for a bag. Guess what - it was a Carphone Warehouse one. Funny ol' world innit? Are Carphone Warehouse taking ...

Going down hill

Advantages: Some novelty items
Disadvantages: Poor stock levels, little choice

...enjoy shopping at our local Tandy Store until that is it started going down hill. As an electronics enthusiast I used to be able to purchase most of the components and accessories I required for my projects from here. Sadly they no longer stock these items and there range of products is now some what limited which is a real shame. As an electrical retailer the product line they offer is quite poor although you will find they sell some items you ...
...novelty electronic gadgets, electronic toys and the like. I still shop there from time to time but no longer with the frequency (no pun intended) that I used to. The shop always appears bare and somewhat devoid of goods these days. Staff are not well informed and appear bored most of the time. Only a 5/10 I'm affraid. ...

Tandy not handy

Advantages: None whatsoever
Disadvantages: Staff, products - where do I begin?!

Recently, I ran out of ink for my inket printer and has to replace it quickly, deadlines to meet, you know! The fastest place to get one from was Tandy. I won't be back! The salesman had virtually no knowledge of the product and was thoroughly unhelpful. On entering the store, I realised I'd made a mistake but I had to go through with it to get the cartridge. The stock looked out of date and very limited, and I thought I should be careful about buying ...
...showed no courtesy (probably as bored with being in there as I was!) and was of no assistance at all. The place looked as if it was due for an overhaul, it was dusty and terrible - I have been in much cleaner computer warehouse stores! There were other browsers in the shop looking around (it was raining outside, it can be the only explanation for them being in there) looking thoroughly miserable. I would pity anyone trying to purchase any large item ...

The Rise AND Rise of MAPLIN

Advantages: Huge stock range covering most electronic/techncial fields
Disadvantages: Not all prices as low as elsewhere.

A long while ago, my High St. used to have a Tandy shop. By a tortuous route, our local branch became a Jessops Photographic store, which in itself was no bad thing ? you get a bit tired of Dixons being the only place you can buy a camera! Firstly, Carphone Warehouse, who had bought the Tandy name in the UK, decided to phase out certain branches in favour of Tecno, a photographic chain, and our local branch followed this sequence. No sooner had I bought a brace of SLR cameras from Tecno, AND taken out the extended warranty, than I got a letter from Jessops, telling me that they had bought Tecno?s interests and assets for Carphone Warehouse, and in future, the Hounslow branch would be a Jessops. I THOUGHT THIS WAS ABOUT MAPLIN Calm down, calm down, la?, I know it?s a long preamble to an opinion on Maplin, but bear with me ...

Review of MAPLINS - ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS

Fix it yourself and save loads

Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: none

If you`re into saving money and enjoy having a go at repairing stuff yourself, then Maplins is the best store you`ll find to help you. They first started as a mail order company in 1972, then moved on to open their first shop in 1974. They are a bit like Tandy, but sell a much wider range of products. Whether you`re an expert in repairing particular electrical appliances, or just enjoy fiddling about with a screwdriver, then you`ll find all the books and electrical components you`ll need here. The instore stock is massive, you`ll find aerials, cables and leads, batteries, bulbs, books and software and lots of tiny little parts you`ve never heard of. There is a catalogue available that lists most of the stock, and if they don`t stock what you need then they will order it for you if they can find it elsewhere. There is also a CD ...
