Finally ! After 2 years i've got my small home studio together. Why so long? laziness and a sheer huge ammount of university work to do, that's why.

Im Welsh but you could forgive me for being Scottish by my meaness when it comes to forking out for equipment (only joking, no offence to any Scottish, just mirroring an urban myth of being tight with the cash heh.)

The Tannoy Reveal Actives come in at around £359. Believe me I've been to every single site to find the cheapest price and they all more or less (+-10%) fizzle off at that price. I was told about these monitors a while ago and that if I wanted to use them for dance music that I should think twice! Whoever that was, they got it wrong. These babys boom loud let me tell you. I was amazed by the clarity of the sound. They handled the roughest, most dirty basslines I could throw at it and they didn't even flinch. Put it this way, I had to use up nearly half a packet of blutack to hold my wardrobe doors from vibrating so much. My 'neighbourly' knocks on the wall have doubled since these went in.

But wait! My disadvantages said "lack of bottom end". Well, hmmmm, how do I explain? I've always thought of studio monitors to give a clean sounding boom when asked of it. I put this to my tutor and was greeted by a rather sarcastic 'tsk'. He explained that monitors give a clean 'flat' sound and that I shouldnt be looking for a boom but rest assured if I could hear a boom from my basslines and drums, then in a club it would most likely sound fantastic.

Was he trying to pull the wool? No Sir, he was 100% correct. I played a few tunes out loud over a 10k system (Im a dj btw) and ho! mama did they sound good!

So whats that got to do with monitors then? I'll tell you that after I had bought these, my production values were also raised considerably. I feel more confident than ever before when making music. I now engineer my productions in a new light (or with new ears you could say.)

I personally haven't found anything bad about these monitors. The manual is a dream for a total beginner or a professional. I was quite taken back by the 'plain english' speaking of it. It's actually quite funny in some places! Not what you would expect from a manual. But the main aspect is that they (Tannoy) get the message to you in a very unique way e.g. the placement of your speakers is paramount to good listening. They address this in a very easy to understand manner. You have a choice of using balanced jacks or XLR connectors and 2 kettle leads are included with the monitors. They also have 'soft' touch on/off switches on the back and are completly shielded, so you can put them near a PC monitor screen. Weight is around 8.5kilos per speaker. I have mine wall mounted and pointing in at me as recommended in the manual. From delivery to installation took about 10 minutes! Up and running and making tunes in no time at all. When I first took them out of the box I inadvertedly put my finger into the tweeter. I nearly died at the thought of what I had just done, but then, as if by magic the tweeter popped back into place. It was a soft and not metal tweeter. You can imagine my relief. Phew!

Theyr'e extremely well made and just looking at them you know you have a nice piece of kit here. Many friends are quite envious already. The darkish blue seems to snuggly fit in with the rest of the studio and when those 2 little blue LED's are illuminated, you know your listening to your music in the best way for £359.

Of course there are many other monitors around and yes it's a case of 'you pays your money...' so I say to you to take a look around, but you'll be hard put to get anything close to the Tannoy Reveals. If your budget doesn't stretch to £359 then why not take a look at Reveal's brother, the Reveal. Yes it's the same name minus the letter 'S' . These are the passive counterparts to the active model (you need a seperate power amp.) These retail considerably cheaper at around £150. So if you have a good power amp, then go get the Reveal now. What are you waiting for?

Which ever model you buy, the active or passive's, you know your getting quality studio monitors at a price that's not impossible to reach and they give results that truly put the Tannoy Reveal series in a league of their own. I've taken the advice of lecturers and studio engineer's and they all reply the same 'Nowt wrong with them babys' (in so many words)

They've been around for a few years now and they still haven't dropped in price. That tells me these speakers are worth every penny.

Probably my best buy for the studio yet.

Quality.
