Advantages: Good features, sound quality, can be bought cheaply on ebay. Disadvantages: No phantom power some leaking issues.
...The most expensive of Tascams portastudio range. The 424 MKIII is a very good purchase for the musician on a budget who needs more than just plug and play features.
The unit contains, 4 unpowered balanced XLR inputs. 4 jack inputs. (you can't use bolth the xlr and jacks at once) and 2 further jack inputs.
So if you were to use XLR - Jack converters. You could run 6 microphones through the unit at once.
The unit does have a tricky operation however.
First you must select the input,
line/mic - for microphones and jack inputs
off - for no input
tape - for monitoring whilst recording on another channel to monitor without leakage.
Then there is a 4 band e.q., high, high-mid, mid and low. Very few portastudios have a 4 band e.q.

Advantages: Compact, Powerful, Large Storage, Good connectivity, Quick Play Media Centre Disadvantages: Shared Graphics Card, No Laptop Case, No bluetooth installed
...I bought the HP DV1355ea for use on the road so I was looking for a smallish machine, with loads of RAM and storage. I found all this with the 14" screen, 100GB Hard drive and 1024MB RAM. I run intensive music and video apps and apart from the sluggish graphics this laptop handles it all. I run a USB powered Sound Card (Tascam US 122) and have not had any problems with that so far. The design is great with a black body vs blue light scheme which is better than most PC laptops. HP Quick Play is great for playing DVD/CD's without having to bootup Windows - I can have a CD playing within 1 min. The Altec Lansing speakers are much better than most laptops I looked at, but I wish someday a manufacurer would utilise the body of the laptop to produce some more bass resolution. I have recently bought a MP3/Pen Drive for transferring small files...

Advantages: very neat, easy to connect to a PC, runs for ages on a single AAA battery Disadvantages: feels and looks cheap/nasty, fiddly controls, sound quality not the best
...does more or less what it says - albeit in a rather hissy way - I suppose I should be content.
Otherwise I might have purchased a Sony ICD-UX80.
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dic-digital-recorder/icd-ux80
Or gone right OTT with an Olympus LS-10.

Or one of the other premium, but compact, products from Sony, Tascam, Yamaha or Marantz etc.
However, if you're after excellent sound quality for not a lot more dosh than WS-331M, and are prepared to put up with a much bulkier unit, have a look at the ZOOM H2.

I use one of these for recording music and the reproduction is top-notch.
I hope all this has been helpful....
