Tea Tree seems to work wonders for everything with me and there are a range of different products that contain this essential oil to perform different healing properties.
Tea Tree is a clear, very strong natural oil taken from the leaves of a plant called the 'Melaleuca alternifolia' along the streams (er, and swamps) in Australia. You can buy it in concentrated form (albeit very expensive as you can imagine) but most product such as shampoo's. lotions and antispetics which contain low does of tea tree still work wonders. I will point out just to cover my own back, that despite the label of 'tea', this oil is non-ediable!
***** Types of tea tree products; uses; health benefits and effects
1. Incense - I usepure natural tea tree oil iin my intense burner at night. An intense burner is a porcelin pot with a hole in the middle into which you light a tea-light candle, and a shallow concave top onto which you put about 3 drops of oil into. As the candle burns, the oil evaporates and gies off a wonderful aroma. Tea tree is very strong so I only use 2 drops, otherwise, it
tends to cause me a headache. This smell will leave you feeling relaxed and plesantly drowsy. A 35ml bottle with cost at most about £2.49 and is available from the normal range of shops like Wilkinsons. For a wider selection of oils, you're best going to shops that specialise in candles, incene sticks (all the gothic stuff) for no extra price.
2. Bath scrumbs/ shower gels - There are loads of different body scrubs and shower gels on the market as well as own branded products. My favourite has to be 'Original Source Tea Tree and mintshower gel'. It comes in a plastic squeezy bottle at about £1/ £1.29 in most shops like: Superdrug, Boots, Savers, Wilkinsons... and is a very dark green. When applied to the skin, it is incrediabley cool and refreshing. The smell doesn't really linger on your skin eventhough the smell is extremely strong, but it leaves you feeling fresh and revitalised.
3. Bath oil - I have a plastic bottle of pure natural tea tree oil into which I literally put about 6 drops into the bath whilst the water is still running. I have no idea how much it cost because I stumbled across it one day whilst sorting my soaps from lotions for body butters from showergels (as you can see, I enjoy my bath luxuries!). I always use this when my body is aching, such as when I've carried a heavy rucksack back from college, sore back from yoga or genereal weariness from cycling. It's very strong smelling; you can smell it from another room as the hot water seems to vapourise it. You don't actually feel the coolness of it against your skin as you do with shower gels but is relaxes the muscles and leaves your skin feeling really soft and smooth.
4. Shampoo and conditioner - This is great for sore, itchy scalps or headlice. I was most unfortunate to catch chickenpox when I was 16 and was in agony with the blisters on my scalp. Using tea tree shampoo and condition, or rubbing in a bot of natural tea tree; seemed to freeze the pain and relieve the itchiness. It was my saviour at the time for a least a decent nights sleep! It is also effective in treating headlice or bites.
5. Facial Products -These work wonders for the skin; opening the pores and getting rid of all the gunk. I have three bottles of tea tree facial products which can be purchased in most health and beauty shops for roughly £1.49. Mine ones are all created by the brand 'Elizabeth French'. The first is a Toner: you apply this one to your skin first using a cotton pad. Tea Tree toners are usally a dark lime green liquid. This also contains peppermint oil for extra freshness. The bottle says: 'Tones are refreshes the skin; helps control skin blemishes and spots.' Basically, if it's a good product, you'll find loads of dirt on your pad after you've used it. eww The second bottle is a cleanser. The is pale green and like a thicker like a body lotion to 'provide a deep cleanse.' The final one is the moisuriser which is white and also like a thick cream to 'hydrate' the skin. The latter two are applied by rubbing into your face. It leaves your skin feeling alive and someone new and soft.
6. Facial Washes/ wipes/ face masks - These are a quicker alternative to refresh and cleanse your skin rather than spplying all the toners and lotions. There are available in most health and beauty shops like Boots and Superdrug though they can be quite expensive (Boots do one facial wash at £3.42!)
7. Footcare -Because Tea tree is a natural antisceptic, it is really good at healing wounds or sores, like those on the feet and has even been used to treat Athletes foot. I find rubbing a little Tea tree oil into my foot leaves it feeling soft and takes away the aches and cramps.
Tea tree products sometimes include additional oils and extracts like mint or alovera. Mint helps to leave your skin revitalised because of the soothing effect while the tea tree seems to work on the heart of the problem. Alovera I find, relaxes the muscles.
Overall, Tea Tree is the magic medicine that cures just about every ache, pain, infection, cold sore, etc...It's well worth it's price and such a useful product to have in the house.
