Improve Your French looks like an average-sized book, but it is packed with language practice and grammar topics that would enable any learner with a grasp of basic French to move beyond beginner level and have confidence and fluency. The dialogues on the CD are clear and easy to follow; it is of course up to you whether you decide purely to listen to them or to follow the transcript in the book while listening. I would certainly recommend this pack to an intermediate learner of French. I think perhaps the BBC's 'French Experience 2' has the edge over it, unless you are looking for something a little different from the usual textbook that offers one of two poems and some 'Franglais' for example. Advantages: Classic, unique amongst extant Greek tragedy in being historical - and the oldest, relatively easy to follow
Disadvantages: Not for everyone, not much action, basic structure

...of Salamis, and Plataea. The Greeks had been massively out-numbered, and their unexpected yet decisive victory was no doubt part of why such recent history became ‘mythologised’. Remember, Aeschylus’ play was first staged just seven years later – and he himself fought at Salamis, having first-hand experience. Little action takes place within the confines of the play itself. Aeschylus was, of course, constrained by Greek dramatic practices – he had only a chorus (of around a dozen) and two actors (one of whom would have had to play the queen and Xerxes, the other Darius’ ghost and a messenger). Like Aeschylus’ Seven Against Thebes, the play revolves around what is said, rather than done. Dramatic tradition had it no living Greek was to be represented on stage. Disadvantages: Limited vocabulary, misses out useful and important grammar
