This game came in my 'Orange Box' and at first, I wasn't too keen on the game. But soon after exhausting all the other available resources in the box, I turned to what I found to be an amazing class-based multiplayer game. I have yet to be tired of it.
First Impressions
The controls are standard and intuitive, and communication using the keyboard is easy. The developers decided to abandon the gritty multiplayer visuals so common in games like Call of Duty and GRAW, and have adopted a cartoonish look. It proves to be a nice welcome break from the norm. I was lucky because the first server that I joined had some voice communication in it, and it was pretty easy to suss out what was going on. I was flummoxed by the 9 different classes and decided to be a sniper first off, and as soon as I got into the game, I was impressed.
Learning Curve
The learning curve is steep, but that's mainly because you have to try out each and every class and see what it's like. One of the best parts of the game is finding out how varied each class is.
Gameplay
It really depends on what you play as. If you're on the offense, the action is fast-paced, bloody and furious. You're under the constant threat of being sniped as well as coming up against the deadly medic-heavy combo, or having some scout coming at you like a mosquito. If you're on defense, it's more strategic, and you have to know where to place the sentry guns and sticky bombs, and be on the alert for spies! The notion of 'cover' is non-existent and instead the focus is on accuracy and speed. Working together is especially rewarding. Have a demoman clear a control point with a barrage of grenades before sending in an ubered heavy/soldier combo to finish them off.
Features
You've got your basic soldier equipped with a rocket launcher and a heavy armed with a minigun; good for those head-on attacks and destroying sentry guns. You've got a scout, and with his lightning-quick feet he'll capture the intelligence or control point in no time. Use the pyro to ambush and set enemies on fire, then leaving them to burn. The demoman can clear a room with his grenades to booby trap vital areas with his stickybombs. You've got a sniper, and a medic - when used in combination with the brute classes, you can make them practically invincible. Engineers build sentry guns to defend, and teleporters to send you teammates to the fronlines, and lastly, my favourite - the spy. Disguise as the enemy and infltrate their base Backstab for an instant kill, or set about sabotaging sentry guns and teleporters.
What this game is lacking in
There aren't enough gameplay modes (only 2 official ones), and though the maps are of high quality, they're few in number. The game also tends to be quite buggy at times
Overall conclusion
This is an excellent game that you will be addicted to for weeks. For those who just want this game, and not the orange box, it's available for download off Steam. Tricky at first, but once you've mastered the basics, you're well on your way.
