There probably won't be a more up front, in your face, warts and all account of ... more
England's 1998 World Cup campaign in France than Eddy Brimson's Tear Gas and Ticket Touts: With the England Fans at the World Cup. And why shouldn't Eddy cash in? The main argument of the book is that everyone else has and that the whole event was ruined by manipulative French ticket touts, corrupt police and football authorities, a baying press pack keen to magnify the slightest transgression of the English fans. Oh, and the fact that England also lost in the second round. As a devout Watford fan, Brimson hits the World Cup trail, ending up in the carnage of rioting English fans on the streets of Marseilles. His arguments and conclusions are violent and crude, but undoubtedly reflect the beliefs of the average England fan, the only figure to come out of the book with any credit. Brimson is particularly good on evoking the atmosphere of the big matches and his description of the climactic England versus Argentina match is a great account of the agony and the ecstasy which anyone who watched the match must have felt. This is a great book for football fans, but its aggressive approach to terrace violence and sausage eaters (Brimson's term for Germans) may well leave some readers cold. --Jerry Brotton

It is his story of what happened to him when he went to World Cup France '98, and what his feelings were at different points. It covers both his highs and lows, from being in the stadium against Argentina and feeling so good, to being on the beach when the riots started and being tear gassed when it was the Tunisian fans causing the trouble. Many of these are not from English fans but from supporters from places such as Scotland, Canada, and France amongst others. It also includes leters written to him from neutral supporters at the world cup and even people who were nothing to do with the football. It is written in a diary format which starts on June 10, and finishes when he came home for good after the Argentina game on June 30th. The only thing I would say against Eddy's books are that although he gets many different viewpoints, it is obviously possible for him to pick and choose which extracts go into the book, along with actually editing the stories themselves. It is definately a must read for all true football fans, and it will make you want to have been there for yourself. I have read it about 5 times now and it has encouraged me to go to the world cup one day. It is the book that first made me want to go to watch England play football and it is great. For £6.99 it is definately value for money. Buy it.
