The in-ear design is basically for the earphones to be pushed a few millimetres into the ear canal rather than covering the whole ear like the headphone. This helps ambient sound from distracting you when listening to your music.
Downside with in-ear designs is that by wearing the earphones for a long period of time can cause a slight ache of the ears.

The earphones came packaged in rack blister packaging - clear plastic on cardboard. Breaking into the packaging was indeed a challenge, and, as mentioned, I do appear to have been shafted three earbuds. In addition to the earphones and earbuds, the packaging also contains a little pouch a cable clip (I don't use it) to clip the cable to your shirt or jacket, and a thing around which to wrap the cable (which I don't get on with).

I received these earphones for my birthday last year. They came well packaged in a box, with store guarantee (cost around £90), complete with a carry pouch!
First impressions were amazing, especially in comparison to the usual £20 earphones that I would buy. These earphones work by having a silver tube which can be extended (to fit all ear sizes), and a black clip that clips them round the back of your ear. Additionally, the actual earpiece swivels on the tube, to allow complete insertion into the ear. A masterpiece of design.
Unfortunately though - this design is not entirely practical for music listeners 'on the go'. I find myself fiddling with them for quite some time before I am comfortable with the way that they are sitting.
