My old Aiwa HiFi was a great little unit. However, after many years of sterling service (and thumping bass) it stopped spinning up CDs. Silence came.

The silence has just been violently shattered with the purchase of the Technics SCDV 290 sound system. This separates system is comprised of four parts - the RDS/PTY tuner, the twin full logic cassette decks, the Dolby 5.1 amplifier and the 5xDVD unit. The system is very easy to install with the separate units linking via ribbon cables. The only frustrating thing is that Technics has been less than generous with the wire on the centre speaker - as a result, I had to rearrange the room to bring the HiFi closer to the TV. The sound is belted out by five speakers - two, large three-way items at the front backed up by three smaller satellite units, providing sound at the rear and at the centre. This fills the room with sound and the virtual surround feature means that even standard music CDs play through all the speakers. Total output is 360W RMS - my ears are bleeding...

However, the surround sound system comes into its own when watching DVDs. The system quickly links to all modern TVs via an AV cable. The first DVD I watched was "Black Hawk Down" and though the film was a bit gruesome for me, I was blown away by the soundtrack. As helicopters dropped from the sky on the TV, shrapnel was raining down all around me. At one point (I am embarrassed to admit) I even looked over my shoulder, such is the quality of the sound - the effect is very convincing. This quality is bolstered by a number of features. The in-built subwoofer cranks up the bass and adds a gutsy rumble. The amplifier allows you to tune the sound or select from a number of preset effects (e.g. heavy, soft, hall, clean etc) and also lets you specify your seat position - tell it where you are sitting in relation to the system and the speaker output will be altered to compensate. Buttons on the system allow you to alter the picture quality (allowing the image to be either mellowed or sharpened) and remaster the sound. The on screen DVD menus allow you to alter all elements of the playback - the screen aspect ratio, picture quality, sound quality, the speed of playback, subtitles - all can be changed. The (very good) instruction manual explains all the features in detail - definitely a system for control freaks who like to tailor the viewing experience to the nth degree. I suspect that many of the features will go unused, but at the same time it's nice to know they are there.

The twin cassette deck is full logic, which means it can be controlled from the remote. Dolby noise reduction is (of course) provided, as is Tape Program Sensor (TPS) which allows you to rewind/fast forward between tracks. The amplifier can be used to synthesise a surround sound effect during playback.

The radio offers 39 presets and features Radio Data System (RDS) display that shows the name of the radio station that is being broadcast. Alternatively, Programme Type (PTY) display can be selected - this tells you the type of broadcast (e.g. POP M, ROCK M, NEWS etc)

This system really does offer everything needed in a home hifi system. Furthermore, the RRP can be bettered - my system was purchased brand new from eBay at a cost of £255 to my door. I definitely recommend delivery - the system is packed in two large boxes weighing a combined total of 40kgs - not an item that will fit easily into your standard family saloon!

Essentially, if you are looking for a DVD HiFi that offers big sound and plenty of features for small wedge, you won't go wrong with this heavyweight system! This is a high quality system at a low budget price - get it bought!

A Hifi That wants to be everything!
Review of Technics SCDV290 by MurphmanL

Advantages: Looks Fancy, Great Sound, Home Cinema in a Space Saving Hifi, Lights Up Like an Xmas Tree, Good DVD Picture Quality, Feature Rich, Fantastic DVD Audio Reproduction
Disadvantages: No Dedicated Subwoofer, Cannot expand system with further stack, Confusing Remote Control Structure,

Reproduction is flawless, and bass is deep and called upon correctly on dts streams. Dolby 5.1 streams do come to life, and THX tests do show all channels behave correctly so no worries there! If you're really fussy, there is also a Subwoofer Output on the back of the hifi if the digital subwoofer from ...
...in your wallet - the Technics SC DVD290 is definately a contender for your hard earned cash! A Fantastic hybrid of DVD player, Hifi and Surround sound system, which seems to have the three skills mastered, albeit at a price! If you can afford it, you can't go far wrong! Well done Technics! I hope my review has helped you. Before purchasing this hifi I struggled to find sufficient content on it online. Purchasing it was a bit of a gamble, but now ... Read review

Top Quality Midi System - Best in class
Review of Technics SCDV290 by stub

Advantages: Excellent sound quality and adjustable graphic equalizer providing depth to the bass surround sound. Compact system with DVD out.
Disadvantages: CD/DVD changer is slow to function and the hand control looks a little complicated wth a shift button.

...system. My previous system was Technics so I knew the quality would be good. (Didn't realise that Techincs and Panasonic are the same though!). My requirement was for a system with a good depth of sound and adjustable graphic equalizer, which can be hard to find on midi/mini systems, which looked good and reduced the space taken up by my old seperates system. The system contains: Surround Sound Graphic 5 DVD/CD changer Programable Radio Double ...
...sound options and speaker configuartions. The bass also has 3 levels of setting to allow your neighbours to have a rest. My taste, not everybodies, is thrash metal, and there is no distortion at high levels. You can out the DVD function to your tv, with the right cable, for watching DVDs or you can run these through your pc if like me, your pc sound is run via your stereo. There are only 2 downsides I have come across. Firstly the DVD changer takes ... Read review

For Technics SC-DV290
Review of Technics SCDV290 by kamransway

Advantages: Its amazing for the price
Disadvantages: Its CD/DVD lens is not as durable

...the price. I would prefer Technics over any other sound system. Its a complete Home Audio & DVD Surround system. The speakers are from space. The only issue is the durability. The CD/DVD lens and the tape machines are to be looked after very carefully. And its quite a sensitive system unlike Kenwood, Sony and others. but don't forget the value for money. I wish they could add one more feature to the newer model which is wireless connectivity to speakers ... Read review

The all round for surround sound!
Review of Technics SC-DV 290 by  thebigc1690

Advantages: Many features to enhance sound. Performs well and looks good.
Disadvantages: Perhaps a bit dated these days.

...This is a system I owned a while ago but as I saw an advert for it recently I figured it must still be going strong so I decided to do a review on it. The Technics SCDV290 set me back nearly £300 a few years back but I see it can now be purchased for the much more modest sum of £179.99. This system comes in four stacking parts consisting of the tuner, the tape decks (which are pretty much redundant these days), the 5xdvd player and the Dolby 5.1 amplifier. The system comes with a very simple to understand installation and users guide which makes it very easy to install. The system itself is very durable and both feels and looks expensive, the cables and connections however are a lot cheaper looking and somewhat fragile but in the year and a half or so that I used this system I found no problems with any of it. Installation consists... Read review

Stylish and Technical
Review of Technics SC-DV 290 by  peteyl

Advantages: Brilliant sound quality
Disadvantages: A lot of trust in electronics

...is broadcasting news and weather on FM, then go back to your music once its finished. This is ideal if you live in a built up city with many radio stations but not so good if you live in a more rural area, although it is only a minor point. Using it is really easy, all of the buttons are pretty much self explanitry, theres just the odd button i have to fin in the instruction manual - it covers all of them. As i said nothing has gone wrong so i maybe i am wrong not to trust electronics, technics does have a fantastic reputation with audio equiptment so its probably very reliable. Its a fantastic piece of kit, its stylish and looks worth more than the price so its something to show of about.... Read review

Fantastic Stereo System!
Review of Technics SC-DV 290 by  simo7uk

Advantages: Excellent quality throughout
Disadvantages: No digital input

...be accessed from either set of buttons, and the intuitave use of a shift key keeps the remote control simple and well laid out. Initial setup of the system is aided by the colour coded wiring and intellegent use of the manual to explain everything. All in all setup should take around 20-30 minutes. The remote control is solid and immediately feels of the high quality that you would expect from a brand like technics, buttons are clearly labelled and are well spaced even for my fat fingers! the remote takes 2 x AA batteries and they have an excellent life even when used constantly. The remote, i am told also has an extremely good range however i have not tested this for myself as the room that my unit operates in is rather small. The manual that is supplied with the stereo is nothing short of excellent, with clear, simple easy to follow... Read review
