You can pick up one of these CD players, second hand, for between £40 and £80 nowadays and they are virtually indestructible.
A friend has owned one for the last 5 years for doing discos and it is covered in scratches and dents after being thrown around in cars and vans. Now I'm not suggesting this is how you should treat hi-fi equipment, but it is testament to the build quality of these units!
