Advantages Anti-shock, nice LED Display

Disadvantages Loud, cant play even slightly scratched CD's, Poor durability

Technics SL-PG 590

DESIGN/QUALITY:

The product is very bulky, and isn’t exactly a pretty sight to look at. Its an ugly metal box, with thick bolts through it, and a hefty dent in the bank, if you are buying new.

Yes this is basic. What you are getting is a CD player made by the people who specialise in turntables. It’s a breeze block CD Player. Black is the only option, and you wont get it cheap. Good strength materials used though, its hard to break, or even dent. Plastic face with metal box – and some very good connectors at the back, but they do stick out, and you’ll find that the back looks like the control panel from Thunderbird One.

The manual does explain what to do, how to set up and put up with this thing, but once you’ve got it going, its still a piece of hardware that you’ll never figure out. Yes all the buttons on the front are simple, they haven’t made it complex, but some of them need to be held in and some don’t – kind of a work around for using the remote, all the buttons work like buttons. When I first saw the remote I didn’t dare touch anything in case I set off a nuke!

It struggles with scratched CD’s. Something any Denon would iron out on the disk, this thing trips, skips, and stutters on any scratch, with the thickness of a cat hair. This machine DOES have an anti shock function, which in my opinion, is actually rather good. But it never gets used, because of course, it just skips anyways.

Ill warn you now, this thing is LOUD, it’s noisy when loading a disk, opening the tray and when it powers on. In particular, the fan at the back upon start-up whirs into life before sounding like it’s a grinder saw.

OVERALL:

I cant understand why anyone would spend this much money on a product that is the same price as a super audio CD Player by DENON. Go check out the Denon range of CD players before buying this. Technics should stick to making their Industry standard 1210’s (Turntables) because this is just a let down.

The biggest disappointment with this is the build quality. Technics have put a lot of effort into their turntable products, but here, they have simply nailed at metal box together, shoved a disk drive in it, and slapped a Technics logo on it. If I was the manager of Technics, I’d be ashamed to have that logo on there.

So my suggestion anyways, is have a look at something from Denon (If you have that money to spend) and if you don’t, get something that’s in the similar market range. For example, anything from Yamaha, or Panasonic will easily beat this hands down. Particularly Panasonic, because of the superb build quality.

You are sacrificing build quality, durability, and compatibility for what is essentially, a breeze block with lots of functions. Please contact me if you would like further advice about this product, or what to buy in this price range.
