Review of "Teeside University"
I was at Teesside Uni. from 1994 until 1999 and saw a lot of changes in that time. I went there with two very poor A’ levels and at the time the joke was the Teesside was the University of Clearing. During the time I was there I was a lot of changes and improvements to the facilities. So much so that the Campus seemed to be a completely different place when I left to that which I had seen as a wide-eyed fresher in 1994. The first improvement as I recall was the addition of extra University run accommodation, and then improvements to the Students’ Union building, including the addition of a very impressive glass frontage to that building. Later the building of the Library cum Information Resource Centre added a very impressive feature to the University, adding excellent IT and other information systems for student usage. The low number of books available to Teessiders has always been and continues to be a running joke however. With the latter introduction of the Virtual Reality Centre and the good refurbishment of the old Library and adjoining buildings the University continues to grow and facilities improve.
The town itself is not the most beautiful on earth, and never will be, the addition of the huge ugly Cleveland Shopping Centre after slum clearances has not helped to improve the town in anyway. But for those with an eye for aesthetics one simply needs to look to the hills. Not far removed from the town is the excellent north Yorkshire Moors. And I also recommend the journey by train to Whitby along the lush Esk Valley.
Middlesborough’s nightlife is good and the cost of living cheep. The local authorities are finally turning the tide of crime in the area. Sport facilities are excellent including Middlesborough Football Club, the Tees Barrage White water cause.
Teesside University Students Union is an excellent institution for the student. Providing a “job shop” for employment of the hard-up scholar. I found this facility most useful in my time at Teesside and worked in a variety of areas, from office work at Barclay Card to working for Black and Decker.
Teesside is respected in the northeast by employers and has a fine reputation for graduates in computing and engineering causes as well as physiotherapy.
