I've bought this just recently on ebay. i got it at an unbelievable bargain at £5 for a new product but the delivery fees was £ 7.99. I've looked around elsewhere and found out that this would cost around £50. It also comes with a 12 months warranty.
This is a must have in every kitchen. It is a 3-in-1 cooker, allowing it to act as a rice cooker, steamer and slow cooker. It comes in two colours -silver and white. I've personally got the white one.
Along with the cooker comes a condensation collector (which is extremely useful, preventing water droplets from dripping over), spoon storage and spoon, and a plastic cup (for measuring the amount of rice). I must remind you that the plastic cup can only be used for measuring rice and not water, unless you are only cooking 1 cup of rice. Also, do serve with the plastic spoon as this would prevent any scratches on the bowl that might scrap off the non stick coat.
The touch locking lid allows you to open the lid with the push of a button, and when it's securely fasten, there would be a 'click' sound.
The steam basket and non-stick coated bowl are dishwasher safe. There are also graduated markings on the inside of the bowl (given in litres and cups). This is useful for people like me who cant really cook and rely on recipe book measurements. =P
The electronic control panel is user friendly and comes with 4 functions - keep warm, rice cooking, steaming and slow cooking.
*****Rice cooking***** To cook rice, pour the required quantity of rice into the bowl and fill it up with cold water up to the required amount. For those who are not experienced in cooking rice, the water needed is according to the number of cups of rice you use. For eg. if you use 2 cups of rice, fill the water up to the 2 cup mark on the graduated markings in the bowl.
Make sure you add the rice first, then the water, if not there would be excess water and the cooked rice would be soggy and sticky.
Next, close the lid, switch on the cooker and press on mode once. There would be a red light on RICE COOKING flashing. Then press START and the rice cooker will start. You do not have to set a time for this as the cooker will determine itself the exact cooking time.
An advantage to this cooker is that for the RICE COOKING mode (only), you can set a delayed start-up. This is great if you are leaving for work and want to get back and have your rice ready. All you have to do is to press TIME on the electronic control panel and set the number of hours before you want the rice to start cooking.( up to a max of 9 hours)
Another advice from me for cooking rice : Do not open the lid during or immediately after cooking as this would allow steam to escape and the rice would not taste as good.
*****Slow cooking***** For slow cooking, fill up the bowl with the ingredients and water, and then press on MODE twice till the SLOW COOKING light flashes. Next, select the cooking time by pressing the TIME key repeatedly until the desired time. (If you are in a hurry, just press continuously and it'll be a little bit faster). When all is ready, press START. The cooking time range allowed by this cooker is good, ranging from as little as 60 mins to 9 hours. I reckon there's hardly anything that needs to be cooked for more than 9 hours.
*****Steamer***** The steamer allows you to cook vegetables, fish or meat, while preserving all vitamins and goodness.
To use it as a stemer, press on MODE three times till the STEAM COOkiNG light flashes. Next select the cooking time (from 1 min to 60 mins). Then, press START to begin.
There is a disadvantage with the steamer that the steaming bowl is rather small. Unless you steam very little at a time, it would be recommended that you get a separate steamer.
*****Keep Warm***** This is an automatic function. On completion of cooking (either rice, steaming or slow cooking), the cooker automatically switches to keep warm function.
I find this particularly useful as I just cant be bothered to time my cooking so that it would be cooked and ready just in time for meal time to make sure it's warm.
If you would prefer to leave it to cool after cooking, you can always press CANCEL to switch off the keep warm function. It's your choice :)
*****Conclusion***** For me, this is an amazing appliance. I would strongly recommend it to anyone.
The instruction manual comes with concised details about the using the cooker and also information such as the amount of water and recipe for various different types of rice (eg. pilau rice, cantonese rice, portugese rice, risotto milanese, rice la greque). Also included are some recipes for steaming and slow cooking.
Besides that, instead of cooking each item at a time, you could cook rice and steam at the same time. This saves a lot of time.
