Advantages: Arty, lively atmosphere

...’s a poor, run-down part of London. There are pockets of pleasantness though. Telegraph Hill is a pretty good area, which has some nice, big houses, ideal for student sharing. There’s not a lot going on in New Cross itself, although there are quite a few decent pubs, with live music late-night boozing and live music, which attract the students. There are also plenty of unusual spots too. I particularly enjoyed hanging out in one bar, which has the look of a squat, is populated by ageing punks and plays banging techno all night. I’ve also been to another pub with walls covered with stuffed animals and a regular musical duo, comprising of a bearded gnome-like drummer and a blind singer/keyboard player who knock out renditions of well known rock/easy listening numbers. In 1889 both Reserve Corps were reorganised into companies to give an efficient Postal and Telegraph Service during the South African War. In 1908 saw a further reorganisation took place when they amalgamated into the Royal Engineers (Postal Section) The Home Postal Depot was formed in London in 1914 to fulfil 2 functions.
