"Hope my review tempts you to buy this"

Tempted is the sixth novel in the House of Night series written by mother and daughter team P.C and Kristen Cast. With it being the sixth book in a series that really does need to be read in order if it's to make any sense, I'll include a short recap of some of the events so far in the series. I'll try to avoid any serious spoilers.

After being marked as a vampire, Zoey Redbird transferred to the House of Night, where she soon made friends - and enemies . It was in dealing with one of these enemies that Zoey discovered she had unusual powers for such a young fledgeling, and set out on the path to become a vampire high priestess . However, life just got harder for Zoey, with her best friend dying, un-dying, and then becoming a new kind of vampire, and at the end of the last novel she had just defeated her evil former mentor Neferet, and evil fallen angel Kalona and his half man half bird minions . All is quiet on the streets of Tulsa, but for how long ?

Well, not very long clearly, otherwise this wouldn't be a particularly interesting book at all .This book starts just after the events in the last book, as Zoey and the gang are sighing a huge sigh of relief about having temporarily at least restored calm and order. However, Zoey and her friends know that Kalona and Neferet are still about somewhere, continuing their plans to take over, and Zoey is still having disturbing dreams where she feels drawn against her will to bad boy Kalona . Could this be the spirit of earth maiden A-ya taking over, or is Zoey herself starting to fall for Kalona ? Can Zoey and her friends battle Kalona and Neferet once again and win once and for all, and what will happen when Stevie Raes secrets become known to the rest of the gang?

The interesting thing about this book is that Zoey is no longer the sole focus of the narrative, with different people taking a turn telling different parts of the story . This actually adds something quite interesting to the book, as we get to see more than one point of view on certain situations, and makes the story feel a lot more involving.

Zoeys narrative is still as irritatingly teenage as ever - full of teen slang and pop-culture references that will make little or no sense in 10 years time (not that I expect these books to last that long) but I suppose considering that these books are aimed at teenage girls and not 28 year olds who should know better, I shouldn't complain .

However, while the narrative is easily understandable to teenagers, I still do find the amount of references to sex, and the occasional swearword may make some parents think twice about buying this for younger teens . The book does have a warning on the cover that it isn't for younger readers though, so they have covered their bums .

The story itself is, in my opinion, the best so far in the series, with a lot less focus on teenage drama and Zoeys overcomplicated love life, and a constant feeling of danger and threat keeps the book moving at a good pace . The book built up to a really good climax, and then ended just when I didn't want it to - a clever ploy to get me to buy the next book, Burned, I think .

This is a good book so long as your bear in mind that it is teenage fiction and isn't going to do anything overcomplicated or have the most intelligent narrative. I very much enjoyed it, and am very much looking forward to getting my hands on the next one.

4 stars .

Manufacturer's product description

Zoey needs a break after some serious excitement. Sadly, the House of Night school for vampyres doesn't feature breaks on its curriculum - even for a High Priestess in training and her gang. Plus juggling three guys is no stress reliever, especially when one is a sexy Warrior so into protecting Zoey that he's sensing her emotions. Wider stresses lurk too, and the dark force in Tulsa's tunnels is spreading. Could Stevie Rae be responsible for more than a group of misfit fledglings? And Aphrodite's visions warn Zoey to stay away from the immortal Kalona and his dark allure - but they also show that only Zoey can stop him. She's not exactly keen to meet up, but if Zoey doesn't go to Kalona he'll exact a fiery vengeance on those closest to her. She just has to find the courage to do what's necessary, or everything that's important to her will be destroyed. About the AuthorP.C. Cast is an award-winning fantasy and paranormal romance author.
