The whole process was straighforward until the modem attempted to dial up the sigup number. It just wouldn't work. There wasn't an engaged tone, it was like a 'non-existent' number tone.
I am an experienced user so I checked out all leads, settings, etc and could find nothing wrong. As a last attempt to eliminate likely problems I tried to connect up using Freeserve. It worked, so I knew everything was in order.
I searched the Tesco disc and its cover for a customer service number and there wasn't one. The only number available is a premium rate one which costs 50p per minute. I decided that I would call it as it should only take them a minute, or less to tell me if the number I was trying to dial was correct.
I used my mobile phone to call Tesco.net premium rate line and ended up making three calls in all to their technical services department. I did not have an account with them and I didn't have a technical problem.
Call 1: This lasted for 6 minutes and the technician ignored what I had to say and started to check my modem settings. He told me to make several alterations which he assured me were causing the problem, or certainly adding to it. Phone cut off after 6 minutes of this.
I still couldn't dial in to Tesco.net sign up computer and what's more, my Freeserve connection wouldn't work anymore. I fiddled around trying to remember what had been altered and I restored the settings.
Call 2: I called again intending to explain the problem. The phone was answered and placed on a desk. I could hear the conversation in the room and I was paying 50p per minute for this. I only allowed this to continue for 1 minute before I hung up. This is a clear contradiction of the regulations laid down by ICSTIS which is the governing body for telephone information services. Calls must not be answered unless there is someone there to deal with them.
Call3: This call lasted two minutes and thirty seconds and the advisor waffled on about a number of things and then told me that there was a technical problem with the server. He told me to call him back over the next couple of days to see if the system was working properly again. I complained that I could have been told this in just ten seconds on my first call and asked for a customer service number to make a complaint. I was told that the only avenue open to me was to call the premium rate number.
By this time I was furious to say the least. It took me four telephone calls to Tesco to get a number for Tesco.net complaints. Once I was given a wrong number and twice directed to the premium rate number before I spoke to someone who told me that I can't get my money back.
In effect I have spent a little over seven pounds on Tesco.net and I don't even have an account. I am no further forward and still fighting to get my money back.
This is a giant rip off in my view. How can they charge for the disc, charge for incorrect and unhelpful information and for a service I didn't use. Technical services are for technical queries not for wasting prospective coustomer's time and money and still not delivering the service.
I have complained but was fobbed off. Why? Well they say that there is no record of my calls to technical services and I don't have a phone bill to prove it as I called using a pay and go mobile. This sounds strangely convenient for them as I had pointed out the breach of ICSTIS regulations.
I wonder how many other people have been ripped off by Tesco-net. I'm sure I can't be the only one. It seems to me that its a very simple way of making money for nothing.
Advantages: a few extra clubcard points for something you buy anyway, fine once you're connected Disadvantages: takes forever to get on most the time
How many times have i seen that when trying to connect to the internet with Tesco?!!
It started off fine, I saw the CD instore and thought well why not give it a try, it is cheaper than the others and I'd get a few clubcard points for something I'd get nothing for elsewhere. I've always been really pleased with Tesco as a whole and felt I could trust them in this regard also.
Set Up was fine - no problems at all. Also had an email account set up ... ...it except that they send my bills to it and some offers in-store emails. I pay £12.49 a month for anytime (don't make me laugh - that's anytime as long as it's not after 3 o'clock in the afternoon!) connection. So in theory that is great, good price for an anytime connection.
However not long after I'd bought it I started having trouble connecting. Click Icon, Click connect and after waiting for them to dial hey presto connection to the information ...

Advantages: None at all. This hole in their security should deter all but the insane. Disadvantages: Security? What security?
I stopped using tesco.net when I discovered that it was possible to send Email from any tesco.net account. I discovered this when I received a reply from somebody who thought that I had sent them an Email, but I had not. After investigation I found that if you set up an account in Outlook Express you could send Email from any tesco.net account as long as you have a tesco.net connection. I reported this gaping hole in tesco.net’s security, but they ... ...any account without a valid password, but a password is not required to send Email.
I believe this gaping hole in tesco.net’s security to be very high risk. Imagine if you run your own business and a disgruntled customer Emails your customers with abusive messages, or somebody Emails your spouse form your Email account claiming your having an affair. The possibilities for damage to your business or reputation are very great.
Unless you are really ...

Advantages: Cheaper then AOL and BT Disadvantages: You get what you pay for
I purchased Tesco.net from Tesco on Monday 2 December, and I can assure you that it's a waste of money. A Warning: My Op is a £12.99 Anytime access with no call charges but Ciao don't have an option for that, this is the closest I could get! I've told them that I need to put this in the right place, but in the meantime I'll leave it here.

When I purchased it, it was cheaper than AOL and BT and I thought it would be good value for money.
USABILITY
To use it is relatively simple, ie click on an icon to open it up. However, there is where the user-frendliness ends. The web page which you initially get is the Tesco website - no speacial page for ISP subscribers with useful bits of news, and links elsewhere, but a cheap advertising tool ...

Advantages: Free Disadvantages: Adverts & Must have cookies
This was without doubt one of the best ISP's when they started, but as with a lot of them the pressure seems to much.
The technical support they offer is very limited which at 50 pence per minute is highly extravagant, and to make matters worse the online help is one of the most awkward I've come across. But the thing i hate most about them is "YOU MUST" accept their cookie before you can browse their site. If like me you don't want to be plagued ... ...turn off. I know they sometimes can help, but they're not essential, so why should viewing not be allowed without accepting theirs.
However, i do have some good points to make. With the exception of call costs and the initial outlay of 50p for the disc the service is free. Along with their service you get multiple free email accounts, free web space and the general tools and know how to begin. Connection is sometimes awkward presumably due to the ...
