Advantages Cleans just as well as the leading brands, cheap

Disadvantages None

Cleaning the bathroom seems to be such a thankless task, and with four people living in our house, who all use the bathroom at least once a day, it is a job that forever needs doing. It is not a job I enjoy, especially after my son has been playing football and has left a muddy ring around the bath.

I have been attracted by all the advertising gimmicks on the television, and have spent pounds on bottles of spray, cream, mousse – you name it I have bought it at some point.

Last month I bought a bottle of Tesco All Purpose Cleaner. A 500 ml bottle retails at a very inexpensive 68p, although it does come in a one litre size, costing another 20p, which represents wonderful value for money, provided of course, that it does the job for which it is intended. There are three fragrances in the range, citrus, floral and pine. Compare the 500ml price with that of Flash All Purpose Cleaner, and you will be saving yourself 30p per bottle.

The packaging is simple, yet striking. The cleaner is contained within a bright purple plastic bottle, being angular in shape. The bottle has a bright red screw top, over which is a clear plastic cap. When the bottle is shaken, the product sounds quite watery.

As I bought the floral variety, I expected a flowery scent to waft from the bottle when it was opened. However, this was not to be. Although there is a hint of sweetness, the cleaner has more of an antiseptic smell than a floral one.

Tipping the bottle, I expected a watery stream of cleaner to appear. However, the consistency of the product is quite gel-like and is a pale purple colour, almost lilac.

When using the cleaner on bathroom fixtures and fittings, there is no need to use vast amounts. The most surprising thing about the cleaner is that it foams up, creating a thick lather, when applied to any surface. The smell of the product does smell more flowery when it is being used, and the antiseptic smell dissipates when the cleaner comes into contact with the air. I literally use a thumb-sized amount of the cleaner for the sink and this is enough to leave everything sparkling. Of course, the product does need to be rinsed from the surfaces, due to the lather, but so do most other cleaning products of this type.

The cleaner can be used on enamel products, as well as the plastic variety, and can be used either neat or diluted. I have found the cleaner to be as good as the more expensive brands for our bathroom floor, and again, only a small amount is needed.

Tesco All Purpose Cleaner claims to clean as well as any leading brand, and has certainly delivered that promise. There is no need to scrub at dirty marks, I find that a quick rub with a cloth will remove any lingering spots from the bath tub and dried on toothpaste from the sink.

I have now used the cleaner for the best part of a month and still have nearly half of a bottle remaining, which I believe represents fantastic value for money, and also proves that despite cleaning the bathroom every day, a little of the cleaner goes a long way. Not only is the cleaner low in price, but it cleans my bathroom and furniture as well as Cif or Mr. Muscle, and leaves them looking clean, until the next person uses them! I will not be wasting my money on any of the more expensive brands again, but will instead be saving my pennies to buy more chocolate.

Hmmm...I'm not sure whether that title is meant to be rude, but knowing you it probably is. Matt
