FAIR DINKUM, IT'S MINGING

Advantages: It's cheap
Disadvantages: It's horrible!

...picked up a bottle of Tesco Australian White wine the other day whilst shopping for a few bits and pieces. A standard 75cl bottle was £2.99 with a further 20% off at the till on this occasion making it cost a total of about £2.40 – maybe that should have been a warning?! There is cheap wine and then there is CHEAP wine! I have been able to buy many wines at what I consider a good/cheap price and the taste and quality has been very good – not so in ...
...This comes in a plain green bottle with a colourful yet strangely old-fashioned label and the name is pretty basic – just “Tesco Australian White Wine”. Produced in the South Eastern region of Australia this boasts being a “fresh crisp white wine with citrus fruits and herbaceous flavours”. Well, what can I say??! It is a honey yellow/brown colour with a strong aroma of apple and lemon. I poured a glass and took a large sip and – YEUGH! – it’s horrible!! ... more

Taste / Flavour

Value for Money

Is it smooth enough to charm a jolly swagman.

Advantages: Price, easily found
Disadvantages: Grape choice, harsh not smooth

...represents a good low price. Tesco claim this to be one of their “long-running stars” in their Australian range and give it a 2 rating, which is pretty dry, I concur. The wine is fruity with vague flavours of apple and lemon. There is a sharp after taste removing the normal Aussie smoothness I expected. There is no oak taste, so its one that missed the classic Aussie oak treatment. The alcohol content is declared at 12% making it reasonably ...
...Lindeman’s Cawarra Colombard Chardonnay, which Tesco also stock, a bit more money though. Tesco’s White is not one to keep and it needs to be drunk (no not you the wine) within one year of purchase. If you bring me a bottle I would drink this wine, well before you go home anyway, as I would not hold it in my cellar. I guess it would be good outdoors in the summer when you can mix it to create white wine spritzers. It tastes better mixed ...

WHY NOT

Advantages: Value the english way
Disadvantages: More expensive than some

...as the consumption went on. Tesco had lower cost elsewhere.... consider this when you buy alcohol at this store (check out my review for Tesco red). It still packs quite a punch. Tomorrow I will try some more from the bottle again check out this site for updates. The wine mantained its freshness for the second day, the screw top seems to work. It aided the digestion of my evening meal. I will finish the last glass this evening. UNITS OF ALCOHOL: ...

Cheap & Cheerful

Advantages: Value for money
Disadvantages: ?

Following a special offer from the Tesco wine club (100 club points) I decided to shop at my local TESCO, following on from my purchase of white I decided to go for the Australian red. This was cheap at £2.62 for 75 cl. ***THE PRODUCT*** The wine came in a glass bottle 13% alc by volume. It has a screw top. The front label is small with a bluish colouring. The back label has more detailed advice: Style: A smooth, medium - bodied red wine with ripe, vibrant fruit flavours. Source: From inland regions of Southern Eastern Australia, Store: in a cool dark place. Best within one year, Once open drink within 2 days. There is also advice on daily amounts for intake of average adults, male 3 - 4 units, women 2 - 3 units. Each 125 ml contains 1.6 units of alcohol glass contains. ***THE TASTE EXPERIENCE*** I served straight ...

Review of Tesco Australian Red Wine (South Eastern Australia)

An Aussie White to Avoid

Advantages: It's Chardonnay - which many people like
Disadvantages: Poor value for money

. Spend that fiver on a good bottle of Chilean (if you like red) or South African (for excellent whites). If you want to buy now, what your £5 was getting you in Australian wine half a dozen years ago, you need to be looking at £7-£8 a bottle. Why? The Australian wine market has rapidly expanded to keep up with the super-fast growing international demand. In short, they have had to drop quality to put enough bottles on the shelves. Not so bad in the mid 90s when harvests were very good, but since 1999 the quality of grape harvests in Australia has been falling. And its the cheaper, bulk quality wines that suffer from this the most. ~ BLIND TASTING ~ As a long time fan of Australian wines, when Tesco did their 20% off Australian offer in May 2004, I organised a blind tasting with freinds of Australian whites. All the wines we tasted ...
