At the risk of sounding like a stuck record I have decided to write about my favourite supermarket again. This time it is not the shop itself or it's products I want to tell you about, but the café.
Any of you who shop at Tesco will probably have seen the Café. It is normally situated in a prominent position so that you smell the coffee or see the cakes on the way out of the shop and are tempted to drop in. If you shop first thing in the morning, like I do, you will tend to see groups of old age pensioners having their morning coffee or breakfast.
We have been using Tesco café for as long as I can remember. Not for a cup of tea after our shopping, as you would expect, but for the odd evening meal or afternoon tea on a Saturday. Why, you ask, do we go to Tesco for this. Living on the south coast of England, there are no end of café's and restaurants that we could choose, but we would rather eat at Tesco café and this is why.
Firstly, because the food and drink are cheap. We went in there yesterday for our evening meal and spent £7.13 on all 3 of us. Granted, my daughter does not eat much, but even if she had, there would have been enough to go round. My husband had Chicken Korma for £2.99. I had a breakfast brunch (bacon, sausage, baked beans, egg, chips and bread) for £2.99. We both had a cup of tea and a hot cross bun with butter. The hot cross buns had been reduced to 20p each as it was nearing the end of the day. Having said it is cheap, the quality of the food certainly wasn't. My husband said the Korma was nearly as good as a Korma from our local takeaway and my breakfast was far better than any I have tasted in a 'greasy spoon'.
Our second reason for frequently visiting this café is because my husband and I have such varying food tastes. He loves nothing better than an Indian or Chinese. My favourite food is typical English or Italian. Where else would you find a restaurant that caters for such varying tastes? We have tried compromise - one week Burger King, the next an Indian takeaway (chips from the Indian are horrible), but one of us is always unhappy. By going to Tesco this problem is solved. They always have a spicy dish on offer and their trusted old chicken and chips will do me any day.
Thirdly, if you have, or ever had had, small children you will know how difficult it is to eat out with them. The moment you have sat down, they are ready to get up and wander round the restaurant. And waiting for food to arrive is a nuisance. They are used to sitting down to their food in front of them, not waiting half an hour for it to appear. Tesco café is self-service so this is not an issue. The café is always fairly noisy, so a little bit of chair kicking or the odd scream of delight at the cake mummy has just given you, doesn't offend anybody. Also, once my daughter has had enough sitting still, a quick trip to the toy section with one parent, while the other finishes their meal, soon has her spirits lifted again.
A couple of final pluses for anybody who hasn't already signed off and legged it to their local Tesco (not sure my opinion is that convincing!). There always seems to be a special offer on. A few months ago, much to my husband's delight, there was a buy one get one free on a selection of Indian dishes. On some occasions, he ate one dish and took another one home for the next day, but when he was feeling particularly greedy, he ate two portions in one go. If you both liked Indian, you could have a very cheap meal on this offer.
Another plus is that you can get takeaways from the café. You can also get takeaways from the shop itself, but if there is an offer on in the café, it is worth getting buying it from there. And finally, Tesco have just introduced Clubcard points on purchases from their café's, so you can be happy in the knowledge that you are boosting your points balance while you eat.
So, when you next think about having that takeaway, or you are on a long journey and you spot a local Tesco by the side of the road, pop in and give it a go. You might be pleasantly surprised.
...so we drove round to Tesco in Corstorphine for petrol and breakfast. There was a display saying make your own breakfast, 35p per item.
My husband does not normally eat in the mornings, but as we had along day ahead of us selected beans and hash browns. Incidentally a portion of beans was 2 dessert spoonfuls, and as he pointed out, barely a dirty mark on the plate.
I was a bit dubious about the tinned tomatoes and beans and asked if they were hot ... ...sufficient to enable all the medicine to be taken safely then we left. Never again! The next time I am caught out like that and need food I will buy yoghurt, even in Tesco they cannot mess that up - or can they? If you know better let me know! ...

Advantages: Cheap and Convenient Disadvantages: Poor Quality
Tesco is probably one of the most popular supermarkets in Britain with its great selection of food and low cost purchases. It boasts its friendly atmosphere and helpful staff and after or before a busy shopping trip, it offers a place to sit and have a coffee and a slice of cake, or a full blown meal. Sounds great doesn't it? Obviously with many of these supermarkets all over the country, each one will be slightly different, yet hopefully I can give ... ...many different Tesco Cafe's *****Cafe Overview*****
The supermarket cafe can often be found quite near the entrance to the main store creating an inviting, if not slightly presurising, feel. There are many signs which boast great food and drink which brings your tastebuds to life (if only this were true!)
*****Staff*****
On walking into the cafe area, I first notice the lack of staff behind the counter. On many visits, there has been one person ...

...be quite good, but with Tesco handing over the contracts to outside caterirng companies who do not wish to invest in proper training and customer service skills, I don't think it has done any favours for Tesco's who I find themselves to be excellent in their training of their own staff in all aspects as well as treating all staff with the same degree of intelligence.

...or a McDonalds.. surely?
Tesco Cafe seemed like quite an appealing job - I have no idea why. Perhaps it had something to do with it being only about a 5 minute walk from my house (depending on how fast my legs decided to carry me that morning) and the £5.50 an hour when I was still only 16. They had advertised in the paper but I wasn't quite sure, then a friend of mine who had worked there for a while advised me to get a job there, even though he ... ...is still located in a Tesco Extra store. This wouldn't be my first time looking around the back of a Tesco store (I was quite surprised the cafe and the actual shop workers shared the same staff area) because I'd been there previous for a job I didn't get (looking back on that now, how lucky I was). It didn't seem like so much of a maze now though, and after walking through the emptiest part of the store full of cushions and washing machines, a large ...

Regular users of Tesco Cafes may have noticed that in the past few months they have become cyber cafes. This is another addition to a very under rated cafe chain.
Most people see it as a place where you can rest your weary feet after a hard shopping session, or sit and chat with a friend at the local shopping centre.
It is much more than that. They serve good quality meals at very reasonable prices and the choice is extensive. The breakfast menu ... ...extra touches in our local Tesco Cafe. A full range of condiment sachets to compliment your meal, trolley lockers so you can lock your trolley away while you eat and newspapers. An added advantage is that you now can collect points on your Tesco card from cafe purchases.
All of the cafes have very clean toilets, with very well stocked baby changing rooms. Nappies of all sizes, wipes, powder, nappy changing table etc etc. Some also provide a room ...

Beeton stuff as well: "Empty contents into a saucepan and stir gently while heating. Do not boil or overcook as this will impair the flavour." Excellent, so you have to get the stuff out of the tin and cook it, eh? I always thought beans were something which you kept forever in the pantry and were never to be eaten, except in the case of a nuclear strike.
ENOUGH
Heinz Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce come in a 415g can at about 33p. You can buy a four pack in which case they are considerably cheaper. Lovely on toast or in a big fry up. When they are served as part of a big breakfast at a Tescocafe they are usually mushed and charred, but still to be treasured.

Advantages: A great comfort food! Disadvantages: High in sugar
I have recently had rather a weird and wonderful experience with a teacake, I was out shopping with an elderly friend and we had to make a pit stop. The pit stop enables her to rest her legs for half an hour, have a lovely hot cup of tea (or so we thought) and if there is an offer running in the cafe then maybe a teacake or a bun along with it.
Tesco have recently been running a special offer, a toasted teacake and a cup of tea for not much over £1, so I ordered two of the specials only to be told that hot drinks were off of the menu due to a boiler breakdown but they had plenty of cold drinks, I can tell you a glass of Pepsi and a toasted teacake aren't a match made in heaven. ( After asking if they could boil a kettle they told me that there wasn't one in the kitchen!)
I would put toasted teacakes and winters evenings in the same ...
Review of Tesco Value Cheesy Pasty.
In a household with two meat eaters and one vegetarian (me!) it is sometimes difficult to find meals that we can all eat. The meat eaters are happy to have a few vegetarian meals each week but on their meat eating nights, I sometimes feel that I am running a cafe, having to cook separate dishes! I'm not fond of processed foods, but when I saw these Tesco Value Cheesy pasties at only 29p, I couldn't resist trying them, thinking that they would make a quick meal for me when the others eat meat.
The Packaging
The 150g pasty is presented in a clear plastic packet. The Tesco log appears on the front of the wrapper in red and white writing. There is a basic nutritional chart at the bottom, close to the best before date. The reverse of the packaging carries the cooking instructions, oven cook for 18 ...
