Drinking a cup of coffee for me is a rare thing. I will decide on a cup maybe once every six months but even then when I drink it I am left with an awful headache and I feel quite sick too. However I love any food product which tastes of coffe - thats a total different ball game! Whether its coffee revels, coffee cake or coffee cream, I love it!
I was shopping for my dad at Tesco when I stopped in the cake aisle to pick up his Kiplings. My Dad loves Mr Kipling cakes but to be honest I am not ovely excited by them nowadays. However I did I notice a selection of Tescos madeira cakes which I feltl ooked a bit more appetizing!: lemon, cherry, marble, coffee! Oh wow, coffee cake! I hadn't had in ages, not since my Grandma and I baked one a few years back. I checked the price - £1.29. That seemed quite pricey, but it was a fair size, quite long and reasonably thick and tall too! Okay, it was a rare treat for me to have something like this, so I decided to buy it.I took the cake home and boiled the kettle. With a cup of tea at the ready, I opened the clear plastic wrapper and held the knife in my hand. Carefully I sliced off a little chunk of the cake, the knife passing through all three layers smoothly.
It sat on my plate, looking quite attractive indeed! The sponge was a pale golden shade, with a thin layer of pale coffee cream through the middle. On the top there ws a thicker layer of coffee icing, which was a rich brown shade. From it drifted an amazinly strong coffee aroma, filling the air around me. It was definitely a little slice of delight, but would the taste be as satisfing?I took a bite (via fork!) and pondered. Yes, it had an amazing texture combination that was for sure - the dry and crumbly sponge perfect with the sticky layers of icing. As for the taste, you could definitely tell it was coffee, but almost a hint of cappuccino there too! It was not overly sugary sweet either, which was a bonus! After scoffing my slice down, I finally concluded that it was amazingly delicious to eat and utterly delicious!
Tasty, yes, but healthy? No! A single slice contains 200 calories and 20g sugars as well as 7g fat. That is most unhealthy, but I suppose if you only have it now and again then it is okay. It is quite nice to serve up at a party in slices, or wrap a bit of for a lunch and pop it in a little tub. This is an amazing coffee cake and perfect along with any cup of tea! I had never had coffee madeira cake before, and whilsts I still do prefer your traditional round coffe cake (or marble coffee cake!), this is still nice and indeed quicker to buy than making your own. If you like the taste of coffee foods then it is definitely worth a try, and is brilliant for serving up to guests too.
