Disappointed with this vegetable side dish from Tesco's 'Finest' range which is described as 'British savoy cabbage and spring greens in a rich creamy sauce with chopped chestnuts'.

The ingredients are there - but there were big tough chunks of cabbage heart, the sauce was the consistency of milk and the dish was woefully underseasoned despite supposedly containing salt, black pepper and nutmeg as well as vegetable stock with its own seasoning.

I bought this £2 dish as part of meal for two deal but hoped it would be the sort of veggie mix which I like for supper when on my own. The 250gr quantity was reasonable for this purpose but even before cooking for the prescribed 3 minutes in the microwave, I added chopped spring onions. Although I normally use very little salt, the taste at this stage was bland so I added more seasoning and some chopped cooked ham to enhance flavour. The result was palatable but far from thrilling.

On its own as a side dish, the amount would be provide scant portions for two adults and the watery sauce would leak into anything else on the plate.

I'll stick to my favourite home made cabbage treatment which is:

Recipe:

Savoy cabbage chopped and tossed quickly in a pan over heat in a tablespoonful of butter, the same of boiling water and seasoning to taste. When it's the texture you like (fairly crunchy for me), drain and stir though some caraway seeds or do a Tesco with some chopped chestnuts plus a couple of tablespoons of creme fraiche or natural yogurt .
