If you are like me you're always looking out for something special at a very reasonable rate or price. I apply this theory to all my purchases and usually serves me well, or so I thought until I took out Tesco Home Insurance.
Last year my home insurance was due and my previous provider as always sent the renewal quotation through, and as usual the cost of another years cover had increased. So I started looking around for a better deal.
I compared the insurance I wanted against twenty or so insurers and one of the top choices was Tesco Home Insurance. At the time there was a £20 cashback offer on, so it seemed to be what we were looking for. The price of the policy seemed very good, with a good price for the options I had selected. Personal belongings, contents insurance and building contents etc. On top of that I received Tesco Clubcard points for each month I held the insurance for and got £20 back. So I thought I was on for a great deal.
Their website was easy to use and the product packages were straight forward to understand, colourful and easy to navigate also made things alot easier. The paperwork came through relative quick and there was no problems with the schedule either. So I really thought that things were very promising.
Throughout the year I had no need to call upon the insurance and so I thought that the new renewal schedule for this year would be about the same or a slightly higher than last year. I was mistaken - they wanted an extra £45 over the next year.... They wanted £367.45 for the next 12 months.
I asked myself the question - why? I had not used my policy, and as a existing customer I thought I would be eligible for a loyalty discount to keep my custom - surely?
I then went online again and did another comparison with another twenty insurers and found that Esure.com was offering a slightly higher level of insurance than Tesco but was quoting me £194.64 !!!! for a years insurance. This included:-
Buildings (unlimited replacement) Alternative accommodation and rent Unlimited Emergency entry Unlimited External door locks £500 Glass and sanitary ware Unlimited Professional fees, clearance costs and local authority requirements Unlimited Sale of your home Unlimited Trace and access £5,000 Underground services Unlimited Your liability as the owner of your home £2,000,000 Your liability as the owner of your previous homes £2,000,000
Contents (£40,000 total cover) Alternative accommodation and rent 20% of contents sum insured Births 10% of contents sum insured Contents in your garden £2,000 Contents in your outbuildings £2,000 Contents which are temporarily removed from the home £5,000 Credit, debit, charge, cheque or cash cards £500 Deeds and documents £500 Domestic staff - your liability as their employer £10,000,000 External door locks £500 Fatal accident benefit £5,000 Freezer and refrigerator contents £500 Home entertainment equipment High risk items sum insured Household removal Contents sum insured Metered water, oil or liquid petroleum gas £1,000 Mirrors and glass Contents sum insured Money £500 Nursing home cover £5,000 Office equipment £10,000 Pedal cycles £500 unless specified item Personal liability and your liability as occupier of your home £2,000,000 Seasonal increase 15% of contents sum insured Students cover £5,000 Visitors' effects £500 Wedding gifts 10% of contents sum insured Your liability as a tenant 20% of contents sum insured
Family legal protection £50,000 legal fees
Home emergency Maximum of £500 including VAT, per claim (incl. the call out charge, up to 2 hours labour and parts and materials up to a maximum of £100 inc VAT)
Pest cover For the extermination and/or control of wasps and/or hornets nests, rats, mice, and grey squirrels up to £150 incl. VAT per claim
This was slightly higher cover than I had with Tesco.
So I rang Tesco and they stated that their quote was very competitive and could not be reduced further. There was no discount to continue another year with them and the operator told me that I would be better off going with another company as they could reduce it further with the 'First year introductory offer' which they couldn't offer as it would be my second year.
So my friends, the obvious answer is loyalty does not pay, and that companies are so busy trying to get new business that they don't concern themselves about their existing customers. The other sad fact that I discovered (mainly by talking to my sister about insurance) today, is that most people can't be bothered to go to the trouble of finding a better deal and then organising the new insurance before cancelling the old cover. They would be much happier paying extra to do nothing about it.
In conclusion , Tesco appears to be great, they were quick on the phone and had down to earth staff on the telephones (in this country too), the site was easy to use and the setting up of the policy was easy too. However, as I have not been unlucky enough to use the insurance I cannot comment on the ease of making a claim or getting any kind of payout. However, I can state that they are higher than most insurance companies (2nd year) through checking the companies on line. Tesco are doing you and I out of our very hard earned money........don't let them get away with it, obviously they are taking their motto "Every little helps" too much to heart for their own benefit....... For this reason I would not recommend Tesco for a second year and would suggest that they are still over priced even in the first year.
Advantages: Online service, familiar name Disadvantages: Unreasonable limits for quote
...I had recently received my Tesco Clubcard vouchers with an advert for their Home Insurance online service (and a bonus of Clubcard points at that time) I decided to visit the online quotation service. I went through the personal details section and then all through the house details. I clicked the button for a quote but was disappointed when the limits were unreasonable. I would need to insure a minimum of £131,000 for building insurance and over ... ...that after spending over ten minutes filling in details on line that I did not want to repeat it all over again on the telephone. Tesco are the losers in this respect. Their online service should be far more comprehensive than it is and allow for smaller quotes. ...

I asked for a quote using the exact criteria for my old policy so they would be comaparable and within minutes was over joyed to hear that there was a £40 difference. The offer was so good that I signed up instantly as I could not be bothered to phone around for the possibility of a few extra pounds discount.
I received the documents through the post two days later and all seems in order. Obviously I ...

Quick review of Tesco Home Insurance
Time-wasting Tesco!
I have renewed my car insurance with Tesco and they have sent me a note about a special Home Insurance offer for car insurance customers.
I have wasted time going right through their on-line application process, only to be told - at the end - that they won't give me a quotation because my home insurance isn't due to be renewed until April.
So I can't take advantage of their "great offer", and doubt if I shall renew my car insurance with them again - I shall certainly shop around first! ...

...That afternoon i popped into Tesco to do my shopping. As i walked out I noticed a leafelet for insurance, picked it up and took it home to read.

Advantages: best deal, easy to use website Disadvantages: none apart from losing good drinking money...
After seeing countless ads on the tv i finally took a look at their website, as i had just moved in with a friend from work and purchased a pc i thought i'd try a quote for homeinsurance.
Everything was easy to follow and helpful links provided answers to any questions that appeared in my noggin.I entered my details and after a few minutes i was at the final part of choosing which type of insurance would suit me best.I was expecting a low quote as i was only after contents insurance as i was rented the house.
I had had a look at other companies but none came within reach of this quote of just £114 for one year's cover so i accepted and recieved a conformation e-mail and within a few days i recieved my policy details.
So i thought i had bargain of the century until i noticed an ad for Tesco's homeinsurance ...
Advantages: Crystal Clear Explanations Disadvantages: Were unhelpful with my case
A personal perspective from a Tesco customer:
I currently use Tesco for home contents insurance, and I did use them for car insurance.
I was even recommended to use them by other car insurance companies!
If I had a query with my other insurance they could help me out or transfer me, not give me an alternative number to ring.
Their opening hours were excellent, their staff friendly. You can even apply online and save a percentage. Well, allegedly you can.
To give Tesco their dues they were very helpful up until I needed to renew my car insurance. I wanted to save money so being technically endowed I would renew online right? Nope
The website said that it was undergoing technical maintenance and would be available soon.
I waited and tried again, time was running out so I rang them up. I was told that it was my ...

with a plastic card whenever you like. Its easy access. This does make it easier to save. If you have a little extra cash after doing your shopping you can put it into your savings account.
You can set up an ISA account through Tesco and save paying tax on your savings, get you car insurance, homeinsurance and even life insurance from just 20p per day. There's pet insurance, foreign exchanges services, and even travel insurance.
This all sounds very good but something about a supermarket setting up a financial services section bothers me. It doesn't quite feel right to buy myself an ISA and insure my house while I'm stacking up a trolley with milk, cereal and baked beans. I might be old fashioned but I wouldn't expect my bank to start offering me six eggs and a packet of soap powder, now would I? ...
