Early this year in January, when I completed purchase of my first house, I have been doing lot of research to purchase of Home Insurance for the first time. I generally have pessimistic attitude towards Insurance companies, and never really consider expensive insurance products presuming they do not pay out anyway and consider it waste of money to go for expensive products.
But, I bought Tesco Home insurance, which was a bit expensive(it was giving out 2000 club points so, it was not that expensive really) than other budget insurance and it was newly purchased house and we never know if there is any problem at some corner. If any repair turned out to be expensive and insurance company finds ways to escape any trouble you will be in real hot soup, presuming cheaper insurance companies do not pay out with stringent terms and conditions.
One advantage with Tesco application was, it was not complicated, few other online application forms which was complicated to understand, especially if you are first time buyer.
Two months back, suddenly, part of my ground floor sealing came off and the floor above this room is bath and there was a leak in it, which caused this damage.
I have reported the problem to Tesco Home Insurance, and called plumber which is covered by another insurer. The problem itself was complex to explain as there was a cut of point where Tesco should pay and should not pay. But Tesco customer service person was very patient to listen to my problem at one point, she was disagreeing to accept insurance claim, but she put me through to senior person and then issue was discussed properly which ended happily. The problem was dealt by that person as my personal account manager.
In few days, I have sent quotations for repair (Which are a real pain to do it yourself, instead of them sending a builder) with pictures. Complaint was accepted and cheque is sent in few weeks time.
Every thing is fixed and I am happy to recommend, but have to wait and see my renewal quotation :)

I'm too young to get home insurance but if I was old enough I wouldn't be convinced to buy it using this review.

Decent insurance policies are important. I have been ripped off before so I know what you mean. My lesson learnt was never to get insurance from your mortgage provider!
