Tesco is one place I would never have thought of looking for motor insurance until accidentally clicking a link from www.bluecarrots.com. Well I had nothing to lose did I?
Some of you may have already seen my op about my previous insurer.
Last year after around 10 years claim free motoring, I was very unlucky to have a prang in the local leisure centre car-park, followed about 2 months later by a much nastier bump on the motorway whilst visiting a friend. My quote came through for renewal at just under £2.5K (ouch) - I searched, got some much better quotes (I am reluctant to say good with my track record over the last year) and then found Tescos. =========================================
WHATS ON OFFER Their internet site is easily naivigable and straight forward to use. It offers a range of insurances, including car, home, travel, life, and a mortgage finder, loans, credit cards, ISA's and savings accounts.
THE QUOTE PROCESS To obtain a quote, you are requested you to put in both your personal and car details, plus records of accidents and convictions in the last three years, and the names of any additional drivers. It may also request car details, depending on whether or not they are already on their database or not. This is a fairly quick, painless process, operated entirely through drop down menus.
The quote is provided (top right hand side of screen), which you can adjust up or down, simply by changing the excess figure ranging between £50 and £150, plus a compulsory excess of £50. You can also add or remove legal protection (although I should imagine in the worst case scenario this would be well worth hanging onto), and you can also opt to chose their breakdown cover for around £40.
PRICE This quote one of the cheapest I got (just the right side of £1,000), other comparable quotes were from Bell Insurance and elephant.co.uk (both part of Admiral), but both companies offered only one payment option which was upfront on a credit or debit card.
PAYMENT METHODS Tescos, offered a selection of payment methods including a one off payment on debit or credit card, 2 months instalments on the credit card with the remainder being taken by direct debit (both with no additional interest charge), or finally to pay the first two months on the credit card, with the remaining 10 payments being taken by direct debit, this method was my preferred option despite a monthly interest charge of 8%.
If you are uncomfortable with paying on-line, a telephone number is provided when you can complete the transaction, but you will lose the 5% on-line discount using this method.
HOME INSURANCE Still being peeved off my NU Direct, I decided to then try my luck on their home insurance (due same time), and got a quote which was £65 more than my renewal premium, well having saved nearly £1,500 I was feeling quite generous, so took this out as well.
If you have an existing motor policy with Tescos, in addition to the 5% on-line discount, they will give you an additional 5% off.
When applying, you also have the option to enter your Tesco Club Card details, although not quite sure if you pick up points through insurances! - anyone enlighten me?
SUMMARY The process was very simple and straightforward. I have had no dealings with their customer services department as everything was done on-line, quickly and painlessly. Sadly with most insurance companies, your first real experience can be when you need to make a claim, so hopefully I will not be updating this op with experience of dealing with a real life human.
If you are looking for cheaper car insurance, why not give them a try? - you may be pleasantly surprised.

Good review. I'm just looking to get insured on my first car. Although the website doesn't seem to mention a discount for Pass+ - although this is the best deal I've come accross otherwise!

I had a very similar Experience Sue but i would go with them again because they were so much cheaper than anywhere else had quoted, and after getting re-quoted for next year my premium has nearly halved!

Hi Sue
Good op. I got a quote from them but unfortunately hadn't been insured for 2.5 years, so was forced to go with someone who would still consider my NCB valid - there was was basically one provider who was very uncompetitive, and had my bonus been available (most insurers only hold it for 2 years), Tesco would have been lots cheaper!
Hopefully I can use them next year, nice to hear your experience was so good!
