Just the thought of Tesco Car Insurance makes gives me \"the jitters\". I have several reasons to distrust Tesco Insurance and hope to prove throughout this review that Cheap is not always best.
I moved to the United Kingdom last year. I have held a full driver\'s license in two other countries previous to my arrival and have been driving for several years. I have never had a driving conviction and have been insured on several different cars, from a mini to a Mercedes-Benz. It seems almost obvious that I would get a good deal on motor insurance.
Unfortunately, this was not the case. I was under 21, and the fact that one may drive from the age of 15 in other countries and therefore I had a vast driving experience, was not even taken into consideration. Yes, I do understand the reasons for which drivers under 21 have higher quotes on motor insurance. But, the quotes I have was given in the UK exceed the quotes given to me when I was 15 and had a provisional license elsewhere. Using Ciao as a form protest, we, the people of the United Kingdom, should protest against motor insurance companies since WE pay over 4x more (not only under 21\'s) for insurance when compared to other developed countries. As a result, WE the people of the United Kingdom, must settle for the worst in fear of loosing a good quote.
I had no choice but to settle for Tesco Car Insurance. I had initially taken the train to my university, but my lateness was notable thanks to the unreliable Reading-Waterloo Southwest train route and the train tickets were coming out far more expensive than actually buying a car. As a student, I was offered different quotes but none of them compared to the 400 pounds a year insurance for my Citroen C3 quoted by Tesco Insurance.
The first evidence of bad service was a problem with my no claims bonus. In the countries where I previously resided, a different wording was used to describe no claims bonus, but that meant the same exact thing. I asked if my previous insurers could write a letter stating this and send it directly to Tesco Motor Insurance. The other companies sent these promptly, but Tesco responded that because the wording was not stating the exact words used by them, it could not be accepted. This lack of common sense in itself was appalling. My former insurance companies had sent me copies of letters which literally said : __ qualifies for a discount as she has had no motoring convictions in the past five years.
I, then, had to ask again for a new set of letters using the exact terms set by Tesco Motor Insurance. These letters where again sent very fast, but Tesco claims to have never received such correspondance although the companies provided UPS tracking information that confirmed delivery. Also, letters were sent the same day from the same companies to another insurance company which provides services to other of my family members and these letters were all received.
A few days later, I attempted to put through a claim as my car had been hit whilst parked in my university campus. Tesco prolonged the process as they claimed I could have done it to my own car in order to receive assistance from the insurance company. I dropped the claim and ended up having to pay 700 pounds from my pocket as Tesco excess was 700 anyways.
Before the completion of 6 months with Tesco, I switched insurance companies. I am now insured with Barclays Motor Insurance and very happy with the fully comprehensive cover which is actually reliable. I would not recommend Tesco at all! I would like to add that many times, something may seem cheap at first but end up costing you more !

@ Claiiiree... the letter went on to not having claims or convictions.
400 pounds is extremely expensive for a cover on a C3 Citroen 2003. For you to have an idea, I paid less to cover a one year BMW X5 than a 5 year old Citroen here in the UK. What amazes me is just that expensive has become widely accepted when in fact these prices are unrealistic and the service is unacceptable! My insurer abroad had a concierge service, provided one claim allowance that did not damage the no claims bonus, and was still very low cost. All I am rallying about is getting your money's worth which is something every consumer looks for in a product.

I would have liked to read some more details of your policy and your level of cover.

no convictions doesnt relate to claims though does it. and £400 seems cheap....not sure what the rallying for the people of the UK is about in this review to be honest..
