Having just checked out Tesco website for current pricing information, there are a number of deals on at the moment for various hayfever products that I thought might be useful to add:
It’s ‘that’ time of year again and if like me you suffer from Hayfever you’ll know what a pain in the rear it is trying to find suitable relief that is not only kind on your pocket but actually works!
I’ve suffered with this allergy since the age of 11 and was told back then that I would probably grow out of it. Unfortunately now at the age of 32 my hopes of that are almost out of the window and so I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll have to endure the yearly suffering and continue my pursuit in finding medication that works and doesn’t cost a fortune.
Now, over the years I have tried various products that claim to work fast to relieve most symptoms caused by hayfever, though some of these have worked I do find that you soon become immune to them and they are nine times out of ten the most expensive brands. As with all products in life it is purely a gamble whether something will work for you and so you could spend a small fortune and find that you will gather a collection of items that don’t work or if you’re one of the lucky ones they do.
Most of the hay fever products are also marketed for other allergies such as pet or house dust mites (eww dust mites!) but my opinion of the following product is purely based on it’s response to hay fever symptoms.
What Is Hayfever?
Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis is a seasonal allergic reaction to pollen from trees, weeds or grass. It normally occurs from spring through summer when pollen levels are at their highest and those sensitive to pollen will suffer with it, in a nut shell.
What Are The Symptoms Of Hayfever?
Common symptoms include, red itchy eyes, congested and runny nose, itchy skin, dry throat and in bad cases wheezing.
How Is Hayfever Treated?
There are many types of hayfever and allergy relief tablets (and medicine for children) on the market and these are known as antihistamines which work on both intermittent and mild levels of the allergy.
For more severe cases anti-inflammatory steroids such as nasal sprays can be used as this is a stronger form of medication that also lasts longer.
My Symptoms
Although I wouldn’t say I suffer with extreme symptoms that make me housebound through the summer months with all windows closed, enclosed in a bubble, wearing protective eye wear, a breathing mask and having a complete air purifying system running through the house just in case, my symptoms are more frustrating than anything and just get on my nerves.
It normally starts with the endless sneezing and although I’ve heard many a time that if you sneeze 3 times in a row it equals the same sensation as an orgasm this really isn’t a selling point for the allergy and make you want to suffer with it… I can imagine those of you now reading this trying to make yourself sneeze to test this theory out. Honestly guys, sneezing 3 times or more in a row only causes watery eyes, a runny nose and the need for an extremely soft tissue as it will undoubtedly happen quite frequently and you end up resembling Rudolph on his summer hols.
My eyes will then follow suit and become very watery, blood shot and puffy, looking like I had a heavy session with the Vodka the night before and in extreme cases a film will develop over my eye ball making my sight terribly blurry and sore. Now the sneezing (orgasmic effect or not), runny nose that comes with it and even blurry eyes I can deal with but the final straw for me in the years I have suffered with this pesky allergy is the bloody itchy throat/ear combination that drives me to absolute insanity!
It normally starts after a heavy bout of sneezing as it must just trigger off an irritation somewhere in my throat but it drives you potty believe me. It’s extremely hard to describe and I guess only fellow sufferers of this symptom may understand what I’m on about. I have found that most forms of medication I have used do not shift this and is therefore the bane of my ‘seasonal’ discomfort. I have had many a funny ‘look’ when out in public because I have been caught pulling some strange faces trying to relieve this itch with my tongue wriggling around inside and rubbing my ear at the same time with my finger… it doesn’t help in the long run, provides very little relief and just makes you look like you’ve been let out on day release so is not advised lol.
My first hay fever relief product 2007
I chose ‘Tesco Non-drowsy hay fever and allergy relief’ tablets to get me off the starting blocks this year and below is a little more about them.
Product Info’
In a neat little blue and white box these one a day tablets come to you for only 87p for 7 tablets, provided in an easy to use blister pack. They contain Loratadine 10mg and provide fast acting relief from hay fever, skin (rash, itching/hives), dust (dust mites) and general pet allergies.
Who Can Take Them
Adults and children over the age of 12 years. For children under the age of 12 years it is recommended that you seek medical advice from your GP.
Dosage
To be taken one a day with water at the first sign of allergic symptoms.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take a tablet, then take it as soon as you remember, however, do not take 2 doses together.
Overdose Precaution
As with all medication if the stated recommended dose has been exceeded or a child has swallowed some then immediate medical attention should be sought.
Warning
It advises you to take special care when taking this product if you are already on other forms of medication such as: cimetidine, erythromycin, ketoconazole, fluconazole, flexitime or quinidine.
You are not to take these tablets if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, pregnant or breast-feeding.
Side Effects
These are rare but could be any of the following: swelling of face, lips, mouth or throat. Hair loss, liver problems, disturbances in heart rhythm, fainting or fatigue, nausea or headache.
Should you experience any of these you are advised to immediately stop taking the medication and consult your GP.
My Opinion
I have only 2 tablets left in my packet to take and can happily say that so far so good. They have provided I would say 95% relief from the symptoms that I suffer and left me with only minor sneezing fits here and there which I can handle.
I’ve experienced no side-effects which I’m happy about, especially as most of them sound pretty nasty, they are quite small and so easy to swallow, very easily accessible either on your weekly shop or online at www.tesco.com and being non-drowsy are suitable for anyone whether you care for children, work in an office or operate machinery.
I would recommend to anyone that uses antihistamines it’s worthwhile rotating the brands you use throughout the suffering season as you do become immune and it’s also worthwhile having a spare packet in the cupboard in case of a sudden surge on sales in the local chemist. My motto is anything is better than nothing, especially when the pollen levels are sky high and it’s 70 odd degrees outside and the only thing you want to do is get out of the house and make the most of the sun!

Review of Tesco Non-Drowsy Hayfever and Allergy Relief
Advantages: cheapest available, instant action, no side effects Disadvantages: only available in small packs
I've only been suffering from hayfever in the last couple of years, and am lucky enough to not suffer from any other allergies. My symptoms for hayfever are pretty standard - itchy/watery eyes, runny nose, headaches and sneezes. It's not so bad that I feel awful with it, but the symptoms are very irritating - so I try to manage them.
So, I can only comment on how these tablets affected me & not how they would work for someone that has a more severe ... ...price of hayfever and allergy tablets on the expensive side, and when they come in packs of 7 or 14 and you need to take a tablet a day, this can soon mount up. This is why I tried Tesco's own version, as it was the cheapest option available at the time. These also come in packs of 7 and 14, I always opt for the larger packs as they provide better value for money.
The tablets come in a plastic tray with foil covering, inside a cardboard box. There ...
