Tesco Value Mushy Peas ~

Well isn't it safe to say that mushy peas are mushy peas, whether the can cost 40p for branded ones or only 18p for these Tesco ones, don't they all taste pretty much the same?? Well I decided to find out.

Times are hard at the moment in our household so I now have tightened my belt when I am doing my weekly shop and I will always try to go for the cheaper options, like the shops own brands and the value ranges. I have to say it isn't always successful, and I have made a few mistakes, but this tin of value mushy peas were just fine and I would most certainly be sticking with these in the future.

~~~ Packaging ~~~
These mushy peas come in a tin with the familiar Tesco Value range packaging, a boring white label with the typical red and blue Tesco value logo. The reverse of the tin gives us all the nutritional information, the ingredients and the cooking instructions.
~~~ Contents ~~~
When you open the tin the contents are surprisingly not as 'fluorescent' green as some of the branded names are which to me was a little reassuring as I don't like the idea of too many additives and colours in my foods. The consistency seemed very good, being packed full of the peas and only a little liquid floating at the top. When I tried to pour the peas out I had to get a spoon to scrape them out of the tin which pleased me as I thought there were lots of peas for the money.

~~~ To cook ~~~
These are so very easy to prepare ...... you can either cook in the microwave on full power for 3 minutes or you can do as I do and gently heat them through on the hob stirring occasionally and not letting them boil. I prefer to do it this way as I honestly believe that microwave cooking impairs the flavours of foods.
~~~ The Taste ~~~
Well yes they taste like peas ........ but it is a nice pea taste, there is no bitterness to them or nasty back taste, in fact they taste quite sweet and natural flavoured.

~~~ Opinion ~~~
I cannot honestly find any fault with these peas they taste exactly as you would expect mushy peas to taste. When served up with your steak and kidney pie and chips or some lovely fish cakes or fish fingers, they make a very tasty and quick and easy meal. And at only 104 kcals for one serving of half the tin, they are ok for the waistline too. So for value for money I cannot find any reason to return to the more expensive brands that taste just the same anyway, after all ...... why pay more than you have to!
~~~ Cost ~~~
These are available in Tesco for a mere 18p for a 300g tin ...... a real bargain!
