...- last week I visited Tesco so it is the Tesco Value Chopped Tomatoes I am reviewing today.
Now I think the worst thing aboiut any of the Value, Smart Price etc brands in any of the supermarkets are that they always seem to be the least accessable. This was the case with tesco's tomatoes - right on the bottom shelf !! But hey I was buying 10 tins and with a savng of 56p per can compared to the Napolii brand it was worth the effort ... ...do not contain nuts but Tesco warn that they cannot guarantee nut free !!!( ?? )
They have a good shelf life but once opened need to be consumed once opened in 2 days
A 7oz serving which is 200g or half a tin provides
34kcal
0.2g fat with only a trace of saturates
6.0g carbohydrate
( 5.6g sugars )
1.4g of fibre
Trace of salt.
Finally I will leave you with an 'Oldchem' ... more
I am not a 'snobby' shopper.
I am sure that we've all met them, the ones who have to have the 'top' brands from the 'top' shops and wouldn't be seen dead in Lidl, Aldi or Netto.
Don't get me wrong, I like good food and there are certain foods that I will only buy branded - coffee and bread being just two. But when it comes to staples I am always willing to try value products - money is very tight these days and we all need to save where we can.
The one staple in my store cupboard that I use the most of has to be chopped tomatoes, I must use at least four cans a week, often more - so if I can save 30-40p a can that makes a huge difference to my monthly shopping bill.
Why do I use so many chopped tomatoes ? You may ask.
I use them in lasagna, bolognaise, curry, chilli, casseroles, soups, quiches, sauces, salsa, stews etc so they soon mount up.

This was the case with tesco's tomatoes - right on the bottom shelf !! But hey I was buying 10 tins and with a savng of 56p per can compared to the Napolii brand it was worth the effort ( gosh I saved £5.6 !!).
As with all the range the tomatoes come in a 'no nonsense' tin - but don't look out for the can as shown above it is now in a more attractive re-vamped can with pictures of tomatoes on, I must say that I think the newer packaging with pictures of the food on are a big improvement. ( I wonder how many people have in the past opened what they thought was value tomatoes and it was in fact value custard - ok I admit it!!)
As regards to appearance, taste and smell these chopped tomatoes do as they say on the tin - they are exactly that - chopped tomatoes. I admit that th first time I used the cheaper cans I was expecting there to be more liquid than tomatoes but this was not the case. There was a good quantity of chopped tomatoes in more of a passatta consistency liquid than water. In cooking these tomatoes thickened my sauces nicely and added exactly the correct flavour I wanted.
Did you know that canned tomatoes are very good for you?
All tomatoes are high in the antioxidant vitamins beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E, as well as the carotenoid lycopene. This means that tomatoes are helpful in preventing heart disease and cancers. Tomatoes are also high in potassium but very low in sodium which means they help combat high blood pressure and fluid retention.
Canned tomatoes (unlike a lot of canned foods) retain most of their nutrients. In fact, cooked or canned tomatoes contain more lycopene than raw tomatoes.

Summary: All the goodness of tomatoes at half the price

...year. A humble tin of Tesco chopped tomatoes has risen from 19p to 33p in less than a year. Amazing, and I wonder why this has happened.
Perhaps the quality was such that they were worth more but were one of the “Loss leaders” that supermarkets sell to encourage people in and to buy more. I have to say that the chopped tomatoes are still excellent value at 33p for a tin and I am quite happy to pay that price although I wish I’d stock piled more ... ...The tin looks like the Tesco value plum tomatoes, but the picture is of chopped tomatoes, so worth checking as people put them in the wrong section sometimes! It is made from recyclable steel.
Storage
Once opened if not used it can be stored in the fridge in a non-metallic container for up to 2 days. Cooking
If you want to heat them as they are tip into a pan and heat gently for about 4 minutes until hot stirring gently. I never serve them this ...

...a couple of tins of Tesco Value Chopped Tomatoes and realised that this is one product that it always present in my store cupboard.
Now if it is something that I can’t do without I guess I’d better tell you about it!
The Tesco Value range simply provides a low cost alternative to most of our basic items such as soap, fruit juice, tea, coffee, cola, cereals etc. Now there are some of these that I would not touch with a bargepole the obvious one ... ...and whatever the price!
Tesco Value Chopped Tomatoes currently retail at 35p for a 400g can as opposed to other brands ranging from 48p to 99p per can.
The can used to be plain white with a tomato on it and very obviously the value range but it has since been changed. I don’t know whether the change is to make the can look less ‘cheap’ because some people feel uncomfortable about others seeing ‘value’ products in their shopping trolley. Yes there ...

...'value' blue and white striped Tesco logo. The ingredients are simply tomatoes (60%), tomato juice and citric acid. Each tin contains 2 servings. They are also suitable for vegetarians. They should be stored in a cool dry place and once opened, should be refrigerated and consumed within 2 days.

I often use them in a cooked breakfast with eggs, bacon and sausage. I aslo like them as a simple meal ie tomatoes on toast. They are very juicy and very tasty.
As well as using the tomatoes in this way I also use them in many other dishes, including lasagne, spaghetti bolognaisse and in stews and casseroles.
The tomatoes are very nutritious. They are full of vitamin C and fibre. ...

Advantages: A cheap and versatile product. Disadvantages: Variation in juice & no ring pull may be inconvenient.
Review of Tesco Value Chopped tomatoes ==The Product== I am a very budget concious shopper these days and Tesco Value items feature strongly in my shopping trolley. I had never bought the chopped tinned tomatoes before and to be honest, I originally purchased these in error, as I usually buy the whole tinned plum tomatoes. However, once I'd tried these, I was a convert! ==Packaging, texture, taste and uses== The tomatoes are easily identified as ... ...irrelevant! I find the Tesco Value tomatoes to be really tasty and full of flavour. I won't pretend that they are as good as fresh plum tomatoes, but as canned tomatoes go, they are very good. I don't consider the Tesco Chopped tomatoes very useful in dishes where large pieces of tomato are required, but in a vegetable soup, pasta sauce or similar dish, they are ideal. No chopping, no messing about, just open the can, strain as required and off you ...

...peas, here's the good old Tesco Value Chopped Tomatoes. Nuff said. Priced in the shop at 39p for a 400 gram tin...that's about 6p more than the peeled plum variety, chopped tomatoes are a staple of numerous foods - obvious ones such as bolognese and chilli, and despite their extremely cheap price, they are one of the most important parts of the meal. Naturally, there are more expensive varieties out there. Even other Tesco own brand ones cost more ... ...approximately 68 calories, so hardly a diet breaker either. At this point, people often tend to leave a recipe in which to include the product...but lets be honest, if you can't think of one for something such as Tesco Value Chopped Tomatoes, then I wouldn't bother buying it! ...

these with a breakfast fry up too. With their bacon. O.k you may look at these tomato's and think your being cheap, but compared to other expensive tomato's their's really not that much difference espescially if your only using them for a stew.
One thing I'm not too happy about with tintomato's is the acidity it's not good and it can cause heart burn or indigestion. The good thing about Tescovaluetinnedtomato's is that they are all chopped and peeled for you so you don't have to worry about that. It's convinience food at it's best. It means that you don't have to stand around preparing the veg all day.
For only 23p you really can't go wrong. I know in some other supermarkets you can get them cheaper, but there's not that much difference. It's like convinience beans. In one shop you'll find the beans a few pence cheaper in ...
Advantages: versatile and very cheap Disadvantages: maybe slightly poorer quality
A tin of tomatoes is not just a handy store cupboard item but a versatile food and full of goodness.
I have always been a sucker (not literally!)for tomatoes, especially being veggie, but I now buy at least six tins on each shopping trip, and have conquered my dislike of being spotted with TescoValue packaging filling up my trolley!
You will find TescoValuetomatoes, always in 400g tins, in the tinned food section, usually near the baked beans.
TescoValue range is packaged in predominantly white labels with blue stripes, announcing Tesco and a bigger Value in red.You can buy this product as choppedtomatoes or plum tomatoes. The plums are 15p per tin in my store and the chopped variety are 23p.I cannot see why anybody would pay more when they could chop them up themselves!
I think this is so cheap and notice that other leading ...
