The credit crunch has been the main item of news for a while so when shopping for a party recently in Tesco, I decided to try a bag of their Value Tortilla chips. I thought after a few glasses of wine and with some nice dips the value tortilla chips should be alright and save a few pennies.

Like all Tesco value, it is a plain clear bag with the blue stripe which has the name printed in white and the Tesco name is in red print. It is recyclable where facilities exist. The credit crunch has been the main item of news for a while so when shopping for a party recently in Tesco, I decided to try a bag of their Value Tortilla chips. I thought after a few glasses of wine and with some nice dips the value tortilla chips should be alright and save a few pennies.
The packet
Like all Tesco value, it is a plain clear bag with the blue stripe which has the name printed in white and the Tesco name is in red print. It is recyclable where facilities exist. It contains 100 grams and the information is given for a quarter of the packet. On the back of the packet there is the Tesco promise to replace if the standard should fall below what is expected and their address and website information.
The Ingredients
Really simple, no nasty E additives, just Maize, vegetable oil and salt! In the guidelines I am informed that a quarter of the pack contains 0.2g of salt which is 3% of the daily amount, so not too bad really I suppose.
Calories etc
I have already mentioned the salt which is one item many people worry about, but the calories for those who are counting is 120kcal per quarter bag, which compared to a 25g bag of plain crisps is less calories and much less salt! I find myself warming to these plain tortilla chips.
The taste?
Well what do we have, cheap price, Tesco value tortilla chips, lower calories and less salt than plain crisps, what will they taste like I wonder. I opened the bag and tipped them into a dish, my eldest daughter said, oh great Mum, they are really nice, much better than expensive brands, was she right? Yes, I was amazed she was, not that I doubted her, but I was pleasantly surprised that they were crisp, crunchy and tasted oh so good, and that was without the dip. I suppose the main flavour is the oil and salt, with the maize as an after taste, but they tasted better than some tortilla chips I have tasted and they weren't so hard that they hurt my mouth.
The tortilla chips.
They are triangular in shape, slightly curvy just right for dipping and golden in colour with a few darker flecks on the surface. Amazingly there were very few broken chips and none too small that I couldn't use them to dip.
Allergies
There is a warning that although there are no nuts in the ingredients they can't guarantee that they are nut free. Just covering themselves I suppose, as people do these days.
Verdict
I shall be buying more on my next visit to Tesco, these tasty chips will help beat the credit crunch and ensure my dips have a good crunch too, well done Tesco.
The Price
I nearly forgot to add this! 17 pence. Can you believe it? Just 17p for the 100g bag. That makes them taste even better!
Suggestion
I made a tasty dish for the party using cooked chicken, cooked rice, chicken soup, mayonnaise, celery, onion or garlic and on top I put crushed crisps in melted margarine, the tortilla chips would work well with this, and give a crunchier topping.
Advantages: Nice and crunchy, gpod amount of salt used, very cheap Disadvantages: Only available at Tesco
...kits. This is where Tesco value Tortilla Chips come in very handy… and to top it off (no pun intended) they are also yummy to eat by themselves.
Packaging
Tesco tortilla chips come in a packet identical to a crisp packet. Half of the packaging is see through so you can see the tortilla chips through the packaging and the other half of the packet is plain white. Tesco value is written in the top left hand corner of the packet and 'lightly salted ... ...chips are obviously bought at Tesco and they cost 19p for a 25 gram pack which I think is a very reasonable price compared to other tortilla chips such as Doritos.
The Tortilla Chip
These tortilla chips are pretty much identical to Doritos - they are triangular in shape and measure approximately 6cm x 4cm. Some of the chips are flat and others curl up at the edges. The colour of the tortillas is a golden yellow with little brown bits mingled in.

Place of Purchase: Tesco Extra
Packaging:
Tesco tortilla chips come in a plastic crisps style bag. It's rectangular in shape and measures about 17cm in length by 10 cm across. Half of the packaging is clear see through so you can see the yellow/ brown spotted triangular tortilla chips and the other half of the pack is plain white.

Appearance:
Like the size of normal tortillas from Doritos - these are triangular in shape and measure 6cm x 4cm. Some of them are flat and others curl up at one or more of the edges which makes them better for scooping up dips. I always seem to 'overload' mine with salsa and it's a race to the mouth before ...
