I've been buying Tesco Value Concentrated Automatic Biological Liquid Wash (to give it it's full title) for years now - probably for as long as Tesco has been selling their Value range.
There are several reasons for my loyalty:
a) I find washing liquid works really well on a low temperature wash - it dissolves better than powder or tablets.
b) It's great for pre-soaking - I even use it for hand-washing (on the odd occasion when I actually do wash something by hand)
c) I've always found Tesco Value liquid wash to be just as good as the brand leaders such as Ariel and Persil.
d) Lastly, and probably most important of all at £1.47 for a 1 litre bottle it represents excellent value for money.
For all the years that I've been buying the product it has come in a chunky, slightly pear-shaped bottle - for years I've been grabbing the bottle off the supermarket shelf knowing exactly what I was getting. Recently though, things have changed ...........
The first noticeable change is that the liquid now comes in a tall, skinny bottle with an integral handle. It still holds 1 litre of liquid. I like this new packaging it's much more stream-lined than the old one and takes up far less space in the "glory hole" that is my under-sink cupboard.
If only it was just the design of the bottle that's changed! the "old" liquid was bright white and thick. The new version is yellowy white, thin and runny. It's like skimmed milk in comparison to double cream. But if that wasn't bad enough - the smell of the new liquid is revolting! The old liquid really had a "classy" smell about it - if you didn't know better you would think you were using a top of the range liquid - it smelt fresh and clean.
The smell of the new liquid reminds me of dank, damp cellars with a hint of public loos about it! I know that sounds a bit extreme but it is very similar to the sort of really cheap and nasty stuff that Local Authorities probably buy in bulk to mop over toilet floors. Urrgh! Horrible!
Still, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say - and despite it's smell and appearance it still seems to get clothes just as clean as before. Using the cap as a measure I usually use about one and a half capfuls in a 40 degree wash. (I live in a very soft water area so probably need to use less than elsewhere). I was pleased with the results - the washing came out clean - but then you'd expect it to really. I'm pleased to report that there was no lingering unpleasant smell from the liquid. On the other hand there was no nice fresh, clean smell either. Somehow, though my feelings toward the liquid have changed - maybe it's the smell that I find off-putting but I no longer feel any loyalty toward the brand. It just "feels" cheap.
The product contains all the usual suspects that you would expect to find in a biological liquid. I was interested to see that the new version contains 5-15% Non-ionic surfactants (whatever they are) whereas the old one had Non-ionic surfactants of less than 5%. I don't know if this makes a huge difference to the product or not. Maybe it does.
What really annoys me about the changes made to this product is why someone in "Tesco-land" decided to take something that was an excellent Value product and turn it into a cheap and nasty Value product. (You don't need a science degree to know that the original was far superior in every respect!) Did they wake up one morning and realise in horror that they were offering a product that was way too good to be branded under the Value label? Or were they trying to squeeze out the last drop of profit and decided to cut costs? (Remind me again - how much profit did the company make last year?) Whatever the reason - this new liquid stinks in more ways than one.
Before I finish this rant there's just one other small point I'd like to make - usually when a product has been re-branded it is labelled as "New!" or "Improved!" but there is nothing - other than the different shape of the bottle - to indicate that the liquid has changed in any way. I call that a bit sneaky - but to call it "Improved" would probably be contravening the Trade Description Act so no wonder they kept quiet about it!
So, as they used to say on the old Persil ads: "Are you happy with your wash?" to which I'll have to honestly reply "No". I used to be happy with this liquid when it was a quality product and yes, I used to feel a bit smug that I was buying something cheaply that seemed worth a lot more. Even though it washes as well as before I won't be buying this product again - it may be cheap but in my opinion it just isn't worth the money
Advantages: Dirt cheap. Disadvantages: No frills, no choice of aromas.
...bottle is basic, but the Tesco value packaging is recognisable. It's white with the Tesco Value name in red and blue on it with a red rim round the bottom. On the back are the directions, ingredients, a warning about the liquid, contact details and their promise to you. The red cap is easily flicked open and shut.
As this is so cheap, there are no frills, like a choice of aroma's like you get with better brands like Fairy Liquid. The same applies ... ...to refund or replace any Tesco product if you are not happy with it. They warn that after use to rinse your hands and dry them thoroughly. And that with all detergents, if you have sensitive or damaged skin, to avoid prolonged contact. Although I didn't find this to be a problem on my skin.
In summary, I am very happy with this washing up liquid. I mean, for £0.13p, you can't grumble at that, can you?! And it lasts a good while too. If you are working ...

Advantages: Smells nice, cheap to buy, lots of suds. Disadvantages: None
...I was in my local Tesco supermarket the other day, I discovered that they were selling their own brand washing up liquid 2 for 86p as opposed to 58p each.
^^^The Bottle^^^
The bottle is a nice shape, a bit like the Fairy bottles but a lot flatter and has a flip top lid.
The bottle contains 500ml.
^^^The Smell^^^
Tesco washing up liquid comes in various 'smells'; the two that I have are Spring and Citrus.
The other choices available are, Spring ... ...residue.
^^^Product Information^^^
Tesco advise that your hands are rinsed and dried thoroughly after use and that if you have damaged or sensitive skin you avoid prolonged contact with the product.
^^^Ingredients^^^
For the ones that might be interested, that probably includes me as I've never known what goes into a bottle of washing up liquid, so here goes....
Anionic Surfactants 15 - 30%
Non Ionin Surfactants 5 - 15%
Amphoteric Surfactant ...

Advantages: 13p per bottle-not so harsh on sensitive hands Disadvantages: the bubbles don't last as long as expensive brands
...bottle I know that Tesco Value will not match a top brand in a list of comparisons but in its own right stood there all alone it deserves a chance to prove that it is up to the job.
Apart from the packaging being very basic and plain-
I have noticed that the value brand is a lot more runny/watery then leading or other shop brands, but to make up for this slightly -your 0.13pence bottle of washing up liquid comes in a bottle of twice the size of ... ...to use two bottles it would still only cos 0.26pence which is still a lot cheaper then the top brands.
Now we come to performance :
I have sensitive skin and find leading brands really irritate my skin after a couple of days use due to the stronger ingrediants. The value brand has the same ingrediants as top brands just more dilute.
Now this means that the bubbles won't last as long so you have to be quick and perhaps will need to change the water ...

Advantages: Can have a different smell for the mood you are in. Disadvantages: none
...usually a special offer of Tesco Washing up liquid, buy one get one free...the main reason for us purchasing for the first time was this.
WOW! there were three different fragrances to choose from so we bought one of each, then as we doubled up, so we ended up with six.
They smell divine, you DO only need a small amount, to cut through the greasiest of dishes...(pre-diet cooking) and everything sparkles.
This is a product well worth buying even ... ...but also the fact it is really good and does a good job, soak lasagne dishes for ten minutes and they wipe clean...honest. Our Tesco charges 79p each bottle and next time you are shopping buy a bottle and see if you go back to your old liquid!! ...

TescoWashing Up Liquid
This is Tesco supermarkets own brand of dish washingliquid. It comes in a 375 ml plastic see through bottle with a red plastic flip cap. The bottle costs 68p and is available in a variety of different flavours including Lemon and Spring Apple. This is not to be confused with the cheaper Value Brand Liquid that costs around 15p per bottle and is substancially lower in quality.
I use this product reqularly. The liquid is thick yet pours easily from the bottle without clogging the cap. The different varieties smell great and really really fresh. I find the liquid to be very effective in washing dishes, pots and pans etc. I would go as far to say that I find it as useful and effective as the leading brand of liquid. I have never had a dirty pot etc. that I have been unable to cean with this product ...
Being the one who is alway landed with the washing up I tend to buy anything I can get my hands on. If the washingliquid runs out before the main shopping day I will go over the local shop and buy one. Shamelessly I am not loyal to any brand. Or should I say I wasnt.
The other week my washing up liquid ran out on the right day for the weekly shopping in Tescos so I bought their own.
It is good. I has changed the shape of its bottle lately. Now this is odd because the previous bottle was the same as fairy liquid bottle and low and behold the new one is now the same as the new fairy liquid which gives the idea that it must be the same liquid in each. Yet when I use fairy liquid my hands become red and blotchy which they dont with tescos own
It is thick, smells nice and really gets the dishes clean. You dont have to use half ...
Advantages: Good price, works well, smells great Disadvantages: None for me
When in my local branch of Tesco?s the other week I needed to buy some washing up liquid and so headed to the relevant aisle in search of a good deal.
I noticed that the Tesco Antibacterial Washing Up Liquid costing 92p for 500ml was on special offer of 2 bottles for £1.20. I thought this sounded like a good deal so I bought two bottles.
The bottle is made from clear plastic and so is fully recycleable and has a flip top lid. Through the bottle I could see the lovely rich purple colour of the washing up liquid which is French Lavender fragrance.
The notes on the back of the bottle offer the customer the ?best ever performance, cleaning ability and grease removal?.
There are instructions for use on the back of the bottle although I can?t imagine anyone actually needing to read instructions on how to use washing up ...
