When it comes to buying washing up liquid it comes down to four main questions as far as I am concerned:-
1. Do I buy the leading brand..which I guess to be named after a winged mythical character ( Oh no, dont tell me there are no such things as fairies?). 2. Do I buy a cheap economy brand? 3. Do I buy a middle of the road brand? or finally~
4. Do I go for quirky and go for the packaging, colour fragrance and name???
Yes, you've guessed it the last one wins most of the time. Sad I know but it brings a bit of variety into these shopping chores.
With Tesco's Violet & Basil washing up liquid it was the name and colour that I was first drawn to. It is a vivid purple in colour. As the name suggests it is fragranced with the
flower violet and the herb basil. Both of them original and unusual fragrance choices....particularly for washing up liquids . This liquid states it cleans as well as the leading brand and also has the added benefit of an anti bacterial action. I must admit at the end of washing up I do like to squeeze a bit of anti bacterial liquid onto the used sponge, so this was a plus for me.
*** Directions for use ***
Im not going to insult you here, but the bottle gives certain instructions. The liquid is not suitable for use on clothingor fabrics. It does not state why, but I guess it will be due to the detergentscontained. However it is safe to use in septic tanks ....! Directions state to use it diluted add to warm water or to use neatuse straight onto a damp cloth or sponge. All that of course being self explanatery. (Isn't a damp cloth a fabric?).
oOoO Bubble factor OoOo
For me, even though it may not be environmentally friendly, the quality and staying power of the soapy suds is a big factor. Many cheap washing up liquids fail miserably on this count, so therefore you use more of it rendering it not so cheap in the end. The well known leading brand contains an ample amount of lathering agent which other brands dont usually match. Tesco's Violet and Basil is strong competition in this department. It definitely matches the bubble factor.
£££ Price £££
The standard leading brand which we must presume to be Fairy, retails at Tesco for 98pence for a 500ml bottle, with the anti bacterial version costing more. Standard Persil brand costs 78pence but Violet & Basil bless them are priced at 68pence for 500ml bottle. As this product is also anti-bacterial I would say it more than competes against the leading brand but value for money it surpasses it!
<:><:> Performance <:><:>
I found the performance of this product as with regards cleaning ability and grease removal to be excellent and once again equally comparable to the leading brand. The soap suds are abundant throughout the wash. The perfume remains in the air long after . Personally I found this a bit over powering. The basil seemed a bit stronger than the (shrinking ) violet . The combination of the two fragrances was somewhat medical or antisceptic.
!?!? Product Information !?!?
Tesco Violet & Basil anti-bacterial washing up liquid contains, amongst other ingredients :- Anionic Surfactants, Non-Ionic Surfactants and\Amphoteric Surfactants for the information of the scientific amongst us. The main disinfectant content is Formaldehyde, (which worryingly is the liquid used in laboratories to preserve brains!) and the perfume is Linalool.
Warning note says :- Rinse and dry hands thoroughly after use.As for all detergents, if you have damaged or sensitive skin avoid prolonged contact. The use of this product is only an aid to good hygiene practices.
The product and the ingredients are not tested on animals either for or on behalf of Tesco

*LOL * To conclude on a lighter note, my husband and son were recently doing a supermarket shop for me. I had supplied a list of products needed but at the last minute realised I needed some washing up liquid. At the bottom of the list I had added, dont forget Violet & Basil. Apparently, when they read this, my husband said to my son, " Your Mother says we have to pick up Violet and Basil who the heck are they ?? Son replies, " I dont know , aren't they in Coronation Street?"
