My son was given his first train set for Christmas when he was nearly 2 years old. My husband was overjoyed because obviously this meant that he would need to put it together, and test the train, and…you get the picture. I don't think that men ever really grow out of train-sets. The set that our son was given was from Tesco and comprised wooden track in a figure of eight, complete with hump-backed bridge where the tracks crossed, a wooden engine and three carriages, plus a couple of buildings, animals and trees. The sections of track fitted together quite easily but loosely enough that now, age 3, my son is able to put it together himself. They are reasonably robust, and wipe-clean, but we have suffered one or two sections where the piece that inserts into the next section has snapped off; this might be due to my younger son having reached the crawling stage, and shaking the track until it comes apart! Fortunately, the track is very cheap to replace, at only £1.87 for 4 sections of straight or curved track. Extra engines are only 84p!
The track is also compatible with similar (but much more expensive) pieces from Brio or The Early Learning Centre. The railway engine and carriages will also run on these, but we have chosen to add more items from the Tesco range because they are so reasonably priced. I believe that the original set was around £10, although I looked for it in Tesco today and couldn't find that exact set. We have added the "station play set", which was £9.43. This includes a raised station platform and a waiting room, with ascending and descending track on each side. There is a tunnel under the station, so as the train approaches you, err, my son, can decide whether to stop at the station or go through the tunnel.
Other items in the range include: 50 pc set £14.87 including raised bridge 30 pc set £9.87 with track in an oval shape Fairground set £11.23 with track raised up on pillars Cross-hatch bridge £4.97 Level crossing £8.87 Lifting bridge £6.87 Engine shed £5.43 Powered railway engine £5.43 Crane play set £17.87
You can only buy these toys in-store, and not on-line.
We have had lots and lots of imaginative play with this train-set. My son is very keen on Thomas The Tank Engine, but official merchandise is very expensive. Fortunately, he seems content to play with the brightly coloured Tesco carriages, and name them Thomas, James, Henry and so on, after the characters in the TTTE stories. He is very chatty about who the train is picking up and where it is going, and has even started to play happily with a friend, with each of them pushing an engine around - which is something that, as I'm sure all parents will remember, seemed as though it would never happen. Overall, I think this is a lovely toy and excellent value.
Advantages: Amazing Value, Easy to Assemble, Loads of Fun Disadvantages: Not a single one at this price
Tesco Wooden Train Set
If you're looking for a new toy with which to amuse your little one, look no further than your local Tesco. These train sets state they are suitable for 3yrs+ though as with all toys it's up to you as a parent to decide if your slightly younger child would be safe with it. I bought my son his first Tesco Train Set six months ago, just after he'd turned 2yrs. He loved it so much I went out and bought a second set yesterday ... ...buy little motorised ones from Tesco at the moment however there's not much point reviewing those to any great extent as the last ones are being sold off as I type! For £3 you can lay your hands on a power locomotive that's compatible with this set if you're quick!

...In my opinion, the Tesco train sets are just as good as the well known brands, such as Brio, but at a fraction of the price. Tescos may not sell such a wide variety of items as the Brio sets, but what do you expect, it's a supermarket!
The only downside i have found, is that the track does sometimes come apart, but i put this down to the fact that my son is climbing all over the tracks (baby on the line... trains are running late!), rather than ...

There is a flying Scotsman trainset with track and railway furniture but I have one that was bought separately. This train will cost about £10 and is available at a lot of toy shops, departments and at Amazon.
A little about the real flying Scotsman
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The flying Scotsman real train is usually the first train that springs to mind when you think of steam trains.
Adrian was 4 years old in November and he was given a brio stop and go station. Adrian already has several brio trains and some woodentrain track. .The Tescowoodentrains and track are compatible with the brio system I am led to believe the early learning woodentrainset is also compatible.
What this station looks like what it does?
This stop and go station is a wooden station building a red central tower with two seats for toy people (brio does some, but Lego figures, plan family or play people figures fit well). It is this central section that the stop and go signal are fitted. The roof to the station is green. The walls of the open station are wood colour. The station has a section of train track attached to it. This is the section that is sensitive to a train being on it and when the signal is red any battery powered ...
